Dove tail rubber install
I need some help installing the rubber and steel things in my A roadster door.
I have broken a couple of the metal bits trying to get them in. is there a trick to it? Regards Brendan |

Re: Dove tail rubber install
The only trick I know is to get them really slick with soapy water.

Re: Dove tail rubber install
I think there are several people making these, wonder if one set is better than the other?

Re: Dove tail rubber install
Unfortunately, most of the kits for these are vintique quality. In other words, they do not fit. If you have the original metal bits, use them. The rubber usually needs to be trimmed to fit. The copper strip usually fits once the rubber has been trimmed, sometimes requiring a small bit of trimming. If you think fitting it to a roadster is bad, try a slant window sedan kit..... garbage.

This has been discussed previous threads. If I remember correctly, even our most experienced (roadster) members have stated that slow/careful 'trimming' of the rubber is necessary. And, that's what I did to accomplish the deed. Of course, if you can get/use original parts..you are lucky guy ! BTW- the 'steel' things are not steel, but brass,eh! And, I would do only a very limited 'bending' of these , as they are springy, but somewhat fragile ...at least my repros are. Last edited by hardtimes; 02-27-2012 at 02:47 PM. Reason: ... |

I think Marco posted pictures one time showing originals next to repro
ones so you could see what to trim. I found the link http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=41814 Bob Last edited by Bob C; 02-27-2012 at 08:41 PM. |

Re: Dove tail rubber install
Yes definitely upside down. I have found the set from Brattons need no trimming, rubbers slip in a little soapy and a thin blade in the back middle of the brass and a little push and they pop in. If you've ever looked at originals you'll see they are short but fat leading one to believe over 80years have compressed, the ones I have seen are not A's much hard, but gummy. If you trim they will not work as designed

Re: Dove tail rubber install
Should look like this, i used a snap ring pliers to hold the rubber apart and get the metal piece started between the rubber.

Re: Dove tail rubber install
Dredging up an old thread.
The driver side door of my '31 CCPU is in desperate need of a new clip and rubbers. The opening has been beat up a bit too. Do these install from inside or outside the door? Has anyone made a video showing how to do it? That sure would be helpful. |

Re: Dove tail rubber install
I think that damage was from a previous life. The dovetail now lines up with the center of the opening.

Re: Dove tail rubber install
First check the brass clip fits in the opening. You hay find that you will need to file some of the sides to help it fit. Second Liquid soap on rubber helps them slid into place.

Re: Dove tail rubber install
No one has stated it, but I assume these are installed from the outside of the opening, not from inside the door. Are there brackets of some sort above and below the opening that capture the rubbers? Thanks.

Re: Dove tail rubber install
Hear is my 30 roadster. Works well. I ground the rubber on a belt sander to fit.

Re: Dove tail rubber install
A big help whenever fitting stubborn rubber parts, is to warm the parts, boiling hot water works good... soap also.
