Default Gear Reduction Starter with Foot Switch

I'm installing a gear reduction starter and using a 100 amp foot switch to replace the original starter rod/pedal. I want to keep the wiring simple so will my wiring diagram work? Thanks in advance!

Yes it should work. I put the batttery wire direct to the starter and used a push button to starter solenoid.

We use a gear reduction starter on our engine test stand, and the way you have it wired is probably a tad 'overkill' on the 100A starter switch. The solenoid requires very low amperage, so just connect the 2AG wire directly from the battery terminal to the starter lug. Then route a 16 or 18 gauge wire from the starter lug back to a small momentary push-button switch and then back to the solenoid terminal. It will seemingly function just like normal Model-A starter.

John,

That's what I first planned but couldn't find a push button switch large/long enough to stick through the floorboard. Then I remembered the early Studebaker and tractor switches.

Thanks for the reply and will post a picture of the final installation.

Brent,

Referring to my diagram, a 100 amp switch is needed because the starter will draw up to that amount on a 4 cylinder engine. A 12 gauge wire jumper is used from the starter lug to activate solenoid. When the starter switched is depressed, 12v should go to the starter and solenoid simultaneously to run the starter motor. The 100 amp switch will replace the old started rod in the floorboard.
Thanks,

John D.

Brent is right. Snyders has a good wiring diagram, see https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/c...-11002-X12.pdf

You can use the 100 amp switch but it is overkill to run the solenoid. Wire as Snyders shows.

nkaminar,

My plan is to replace the old starter rod with a tractor, foot operated switch that will protrude far enough through the floor area. Following your inputs, I will wire the tractor switch like the Snyder's diagram. That will require only the battery cable to the starter lug and a couple of #12 or 14 wires to the solenoid.

Appreciate all of the inputs!
