What did you trade for a Model A?
Back in the 1970's I had a green 1955 chevy 4door that kept popping out of 3rd gear.
I traded it for a 1929 closed cab pickup with a broken rear end. I replaced the rear end and drove the truck for several years. I had a contractor friend who got his Model A, by doing a bathroom remodel for someone. Have you ever traded anything for a Model A? |

I was 16. I traded in my Schwinn and $100 in Savings Bonds to get enough money to buy my 1929 Tudor in 1961. My dad thought I was crazy. I still have the car.

Re: What did you trade for a Model A?
Back in the early 80's I traded a 1973 VW Thing (modern version of the WWII German army Jeep or Kubelwagen) for a '30 town sedan. The VW needed some work and the town sedan was a real poor amateur restoration. I learned a lot abot "A's" from that sedan.

Re: What did you trade for a Model A?
I've only paid dollars for mine. But my dad has done a bit of trading. Back in the sixties, he would go around the farms of the local area, and pick up unwanted cars, especially Model A's. There was one that was in a shed, but the owner didn't want to get rid of it because it was a good source of nuts and bolts for farm repairs. Through out the next few weeks, dad requisitioned nuts and bolts of various sizes from his work place. When he thought he had a big enough supply, went back to the farmer, and offered to swap the nuts and bolts for the A. A swap was made.

I think one guy here mentioned he swapped a case of oysters or something like that for an A. Can't remember if he got or gave the A.
Oops! I see it right above! It was scallops! That's hilarious |

Re: What did you trade for a Model A?
A '27 Chevy. Well not a direct trade but that was the result I was endeavouring to achieve. Always wanted an A. It took me about 10 years to learn that the Chev, although fun, was just a stopgap that was standing in the way of my ambition. The longer I kept it, the longer it would be before I could park an A in the same spot.

I bought a farm trailer for $10 in 1961 and ended up trading it for my pickup. The farmer was going to make a trailer out of it.

Re: What did you trade for a Model A?
My youngest son, in his 30's had come to a dead end with the 30' coupe after 8 yrs of ownership, so he called me on Father's Day 2010 and asked if I "STILL" wanted to buy it from him. Silly question, so I took the trailer that day to his place and brought it home for a good price. It was pretty much a basket case, wasn't running and had not been for many years. 2.5 months later I was driving it around the back yard.

Re: What did you trade for a Model A?
I had a buddy that had a 31 steel top pick up under a shed. His father had bought it in the 60's as a farm truck. my buddy who's 40 now disassembled most of the truck when he was 14. I spied it about 8 yrs ago. I tried and tried to do some horse trading. Finally after about a year I traded for work helping him on his house and tearing down a condemned house on a piece of property he owned. Now Ol Walter is in my driveway and has a new Huckster body style. Walter will be the gift hauler at my daughters wedding in Oct.

When I was 17 I traded a '27 T coupe for an A coupe, don't remember what year the A was.

A few of my lady friends went together and got Sarah for me, I've no idea what they paid for her, I didn't dare ask.

Re: What did you trade for a Model A?
Yeah, I traded my 'ex-wife' for my Roadster!
I actually paid cash for the 'A', but two days after bringing it home, I was buying a enclosed trailer to haul it (and me) away. |

Re: What did you trade for a Model A?
1925 Studebaker Duplex Phaeton
Second car from the left, not restored, missing half the hood, 354 CU 6, 8 day Elgin clock, Cigar lighter, converted to a Service car or wrecker and had a very nice double sidewall box, die stamped and formed the reveals for the doors. I got my 1930 Canadian Standard Phaeton, missing the Top Irons, been sitting in a field since 1959, looked at for a year and a half, but got it going in 4 days once I decided to drive it. Quote:
Had a '26 Chev Tudor, good learning experience, as it had some unusual designed stuff, like, VACUUM TANK, to suck gas from the BACK of the car, NO combustion chamber in the head, CONDENSOR, incorporated INSIDE the coil, "STAR-LIKE" diffusers in the intake ports, for better mileage, exposed push rods & lifters, & a felt pad, to oil the rocker arms AND, only had 2 wheel brakes, service brakes were BANDS around the drum & park brake was shoes, inside the drum!! AND, its' TAIL LIGHT wuz in the middle of the spare tire. The car was a TOTALLY UNMOLESTED car, except for a 2" water pipe straight pipe. Body was perfect & original MOHAIR interior would rate an 8!!! Bill W.

Bill, much like the '26 Chevrolet Touring shown left of the Studebaker.

Re: What did you trade for a Model A?
Back in the mid 60's my Dad traded 20 yards of road gravel in place and spread for the pick up I now have. It was all in pieces but basically all there, as the kid that did the shoveling and the raking, I thought the other guy got the better bargain, not so much anymore though......Thanks Pa!!
