Default Black crackle paint finish....any clues ?

I plan to restore the black crackle paint finish on this 1950's Lucas wiper motor. Can anyone suggest a suitable aerosol paint and have any tips on getting a perfect finish ?

David,

While not much help given where you are, hardware stores in the States offer rattle-can crackle finish spray paint in a number of colors, including black.

Eastwood on line offers VHT High Temp that is good stuff even IF you don't need the high temp portion of the offering. As David mentioned above every auto supply store, Home Depot, Lowes and Ace Hardware stores have it too, not sure about Jolly Ole' England???

David and Rockfla,

Thanks for your input. We have many aerosol variants here in the UK;some better than others. I need to hear from someone who has practical experience having carried out this process. There are a number of videos on You Tube but the results look less than impressive.

Here's the car and sorry it's not a Ford !

I'm assuming that you really want wrinkle paint. Crackle paint typically is large cracking paint used to make furniture look antique. As I remember the type we used to use required heating in an oven to wrinkle well but I don't know that its required anymore.

Looking at the first post picture, the finish looks more like the same finish as undercoating. Hopefully the spray version gives you the desired "crinkle" as I have also seen some that is more like a "Camera case" finish too!!!! Beautifully done car by the way, AC is it???

Rockfla,

Yes, camera finish is EXACTLY what I am trying to achieve. The car is a 1956 Aston Martin DB2/4 MK2 fixed head coupe

Its been about forty-year's since I've used any of that VHT wrinkle paint. VHT still makes it. I think you sprayed it on and then put it in the oven at a certain temperature to help cause the wrinkle effect. The problem is going to be getting the exact wrinkle texture your after. I've seen it real coarse and just a slight rough finish. I have the same problem. I have a 1966 Shelby GT-350 that has black wrinkle Cobra valve covers with brushed aluminum fins. The valve covers need the black wrinkle redone.

Powder paint shops have black wrinkle powder coating in different glosses. They do a lot of motorcycle engine parts with it.

Here is an example.

Wrinkle paint relies greatly upon the fast evaporation of the paint's base. Temperature is key, so follow the instructions carefully soas to achieve the best appearance. Both temperature of the air and temperature of the metal you are spraying. I do recall some wrinkle paints advocate using a heat lamp. I would also check for youTube videos for hints.

I have painted hundreds of radio rack panels and valve covers with black wrinkle paint.
There are several different brands available. They all work fine.
It is available on eBay and other places.
I wipe the surface with lacquer thinner first, spray with a heavy coat and the cook in an oven at 300 degrees till it wrinkles. Take it out immediately and let it cool several hours before using.

I personally have had the best luck with Harley Davidson wrinkle black paint. Others I have tried work good but the HD paint is awesome. Pete’s process is same for me
Good luck

I have used the VHT brand the last time I used it a few weeks ago. I use a heat gun to heat up the part after I spray a heavy coat on it. May take more than one coat. But the heat gun gives a little more control so that you can heat up areas that are not wrinkling at the same rate as some other areas.

Don't know if this will be of any use but last night I was working on a vintage Underwood typewriter my wife bought at a yard sale and the metal side covers have a finish almost identical to what your photo shows. If there are any vintage typewriter repair shops in your neck of the woods you might check with them to see what they use.

Thanks for the advice. We do have Harley Davidson crackle paint here in the UK;not cheap at £29.00 (not dollars !) I have ordered a can and plan to do the job in a week or so.

If it's not an unhappy mess I will show the result !

Radio Shack used to have it. I used a lot of it years
ago on control boxes when I made MIG welders. It
wrinkles better if you heat it with a heat gun. G.M.
