Tuesday Tech: Which valve to adjust? Mart's easy method.
I try and explain an easy way to work out which valve to adjust. Remember this principle: When No.6 Exhaust is open, No.1 exhaust is directly opposite the lobe. And so on for all the valves. I used the easier method and did both valves on each cylinder. It worked so well I thought I'd post up a simple tech video. This could be adapted to any motor and could be done from a distributor with some ingenuity. Thanks for watching. Mart.

Thank Mart;
I was a little confused at first, but I learned something today, I have one bare block, one with stuck pistons and one complete engine to play with when the weather gets warm. I work on these in a portable garage it's supposed to get to -4F later this week. Looking forward to Spring. |

That's a clever observation Mart. Your ability to coherently keep it straight mentally is impressive, but my undisaplenned brain can only manage the 1 full turn past peak opening on one at a time. That assures I don't screw it up. LOL

My brain is so full of useless information, that there is no more room for more. When the valve is open, rotate crank one revolution and adjust it. works for any cam. Ya just have to be lazy to fidder this out.

Good job Mart! I think that’s pretty simple.
Ol Ron, In Marts setup with no crank, then you would turn the cam gear 1/2 turn if I am thinking correctly. |

Re: Tuesday Tech: Which valve to adjust? Mart's easy method.
If you ignore all the preamble and just write the firing order around the timing cover mounting face like that, it'll work. Just align the cam gear timing mark with each number in turn and adjust both valves for that cylinder. You don't need to know how it works, just that it does work.
Thanks for all the interest. The video has had a good number of views. I tried to find a thread on here where people's methods were being discussed but I couldn't find it. I was thinking of this as a response to that thread. Mart. |
