Remove rear axle seal
Hello again,
I need to replace the rear axle seals on my 29 model A. I've removed the drum and snap ring. How do I remove the old seal? The center hole is to small to get an angle with a screwdriver to drive it out without bending it. I've tried to get it out with a driver between the bearing and seal, got it to move slightly but that's all. What's the easy way? Thanks |

Re: Remove rear axle seal
I used a big screwdriver and a pipe wrench to pry/break the seal apart and lift it out. It worked, but I'm sure someone here will post a better and easier method.

Re: Remove rear axle seal
I sometimes use an old valve that has has 3/4's of it ground off, maling an 'L' shaped tool. 216 Chevy valves are long stemmed, so work well.

Got it!
Be creative, think outside the box, make a L shape tool. Apply many thumps! |

Re: Remove rear axle seal
I use an old tire iron for working on split rims, see attached photos.

I usually use a slide hammer with a hook on the end.

Re: Remove rear axle seal
It sounds as if you’re trying to not damage and reuse the seal? Don’t waste time trying. They’re only around $5 from the dealers.putting it in without the correct tool is tricky enough to do without damaging the seal.

Re: Remove rear axle seal
An old set of rear wheel bearing rollers makes an excellent tool for refitting the seals.
