Spot Welds on '29 CC Pickup Bed
I need help for a friend that is trying to restore a pickup bed, mixing new parts with old. Does anyone out there know the locations of the spot welds? Or any information that will put him the right direction?

Re: Spot Welds on '29 CC Pickup Bed
I may be wrong but I believe my 29 CCPU bed is riveted, with no spot welds. I can go check if no one else pipes in.

Re: Spot Welds on '29 CC Pickup Bed
Yes, there are a few spot welds on the narrow bed. I know for sure that the plate that covers the rear support channel, (it also supports the rear of the bed wood) is spot welded to the support channel along it's length.
I'm pretty sure there are a few other places where there were originally spot welds, I can take a look this weekend. Sorry for the blurry photo, but you can still see where the spot welds were located on part of that area, those spots freshly ground off. You can also see the remnants of the wood member that was in that channel. -DAN |

Are they all the same size ? How did you remove them ? Thanks ! |

Re: Spot Welds on '29 CC Pickup Bed
Mike, the spot welds seem to vary a little bit in size but I will guess that the tips of the spot welder were no larger than 1/4". I looked at the bed again today and found more spot welds on the bracket that holds the rear fenders on. It looks like it may have been spot welded in a couple of places to hold it before it was riveted.
The rear Z plate that I removed was partially loose to start with. I just peeled it up and took a sharp chisel to remove the rest of the spot welds. The Z plate wasn't any good so I destroyed the rest of it as I removed it. I ground down the rest of the spot weld that remained on the U channel after the Z plate was removed. I have a new z plate to put back in when I get that point. I don't plan on removing any of the other spot welded pieces, there are no issues with any of them. Tom W has mentioned a spot weld drill, something like that would probably be a good idea on the heavy guage steel parts. -DAN |

Re: Spot Welds on '29 CC Pickup Bed
I've just taken my bed completely apart. The welds are very hard to find. On a more modern car you can see the indentations along the panels, on the A bed I had to slide a fine chisel along the join until I found the point where the panels wouldn't move apart, then lever up the panel that is due for replacement. You can then see the stressed point where the weld is and drill it out. Patience is needed if you are trying to save one of the panels involved.
