thinking of adding downdraft carb intake
Thinking of converting to downdraft intake with Stromberg 48 carb with air cleaner, circa 1934 on a model B 1933 engine. Planning to use an Ansen manifold.....
What problems could I have removing the oil manifold after 80 years and installing the new manifold. I know the stromberg 48 carb will have to be set up properly but I would hate to have physical problems removing the old manifold where I could need Drill and taping new studs. What are some common experiences. I don;t want to do more harm than good. Some times old things that are working should just be left alone! |

Re: thinking of adding downdraft carb intake
The Ansen should line right up, no drilling or tapping required. Beyond that it is just like installing any manifold. I use the copper gaskets. And it is likely that the old manifolds have been removed and reinstalled sometime in the past 80 years so don't worry about that. Go for it.

Should the intake be kept as cool as possible or be allowed to run hot? |

Re: thinking of adding downdraft carb intake
IS YOUR CAR RUNNING NOW?? If so CONGRATULATIONS ! ! !
On the swap, soak the nuts/studs with a 50/50 mixture of Automatic tranny fluid and acetone, put on a few times, then SLOWLY try to back the nuts off. Paul in CT |

Re: thinking of adding downdraft carb intake
The manifold will warm up with the engine and help atomize the mixture. A cooler mixture is more dense, but the atomization is needed for smoother running. I have a vintage Thomas with fins and it runs fine. I think the fins are more decorative than practical, though they will tend to keep the manifold from getting too hot up near the carb. The Ansen will run fine with fins.

On the 48- start with stock jetting, it should be very close to what you need. #48 main jets and 65 power jet.

Re: thinking of adding downdraft carb intake
Ansen is a nice intake. We're currently running one with a Stromberg 81 carb. Takes s bit longer to warm up bu otherwise No issues.
