Seat Covers to cover Upholstery

When I bought my Oct. '28 Fordor Sedan from Red Grow in 1964, it came with a nice set of Seat Covers, which covered the pristine original upholstery. In 1965, when I bought my 1930 Townsedan, it too had a nice set of 'Seat Covers' covering the mint original upholstery. The next year when I bought my 1932 Pontiac Dlx Sport Coupe, it had nice upholstery also. To help protect it, I ordered (and installed) from J.C. Whitney a set of Seat Covers (not upholstry) made specifically for the '32 Pontiac.

Well, now I have excellent seat upholstery in my '31 Ford Dlx. Coupe. I would now like to install over the upholstery, a set of 'Seat Covers' to protect the upholstery. Does anyone know who carries 'Seat Covers' (not seat upholstery) for the Ford Model A ?

I have already investigated all the 'usual suspects' - A parts catalogs, LeBaron Bonny, etc.

I've often wondered the same thing. I miss the JC Whitney of the mid 60's, as they had a lot of good car parts and accessories. I bought the carpeting for my 55 Chevy from them, and it was the same look and quality as the original factory carpeting. Wards and Sears also had a lot of nice car stuff back then.

My 50 Stude has mint restored upholstery, so I went to the second hand store and found some nice bed spreads to throw over the seats. Later I will stitch them for a custom fit. I was thinking pillow cases would work nice for the seat backs on the front seats of a Model A Tudor.

I also found fairly darn good upholstery under seat cover in my 30 Tudor .They were pined on with straight pins ,the doors had covers as well greenish grey fabric /oilcloth green alligator texture looks store bought in the 50's .

nobody makes them any longer, as business went south.
this would be a nice little cottage industry for someone. The problem is the price point.
covers would have to be very inexpensive, otherwise people just buy new upholstery.
If JC could make a profit at it, they would still sell them.
I have been thinking about this for awhile. How many different models to carry and then heck, if you sell the wrong color, nobody will buy them. sounds like a headache...............

Back in the '40s and '50s, it was very common for people to put seat covers on the seats of their new cars. My did was just as guilty. I couldn't understand why people would "save" the seats in their new cars for the next buyer. Today's interiors are much more durable and will last for many years without coming apart.

Haha, My dad had clear plastic seat covers with little gold stars on them in his '58 Fairlane 500. Not so sure they would look so good in my Fordor.

Another 'Seat Cover' that was used frequently here in California, as I remember from the '40's & '50's, was a Mexican themed blanket. Bright colours, wide horizontal stripes. It was quick, efficient, and inexpensive. But you did have to appreciate a 'splash of color' in your interior.

About a year ago I also did an extensive web search for covers ,[ and I also wish J C Whitney was still offering the stuff they used to ] , I found this site , and after a few e-mails asking questions they recommended I call them with the specific's on what I wanted . But you can design your on style / material / pattern , ect. to something you like . As yet I haven't ordered any , still deciding how fancy I want to get .

I happen to have a NOS set of After-market seat covers. These are the woven grass (?) type, (remember those ?), still in the original box. They are in a brown plaid design and in mint condition.
They are, probably, J.C. Whitney, Western Auto, etc.
I don't know what all they fit, but are made for a four door, with two bench seats, without arm rests.
I haven't taken pictures, yet.

Just a couple weeks ago, at the last Pomona Swap meet, I met a guy who had a van full of NOS seat covers in various colors and fabrics. He explained that they would fit a front and a rear seat bench up to about the late 1940s, and prices were from $70 to $110. Next meet I'll get his phone number so that you can contact him.

I am re doing my Fordor seats .The kit is a brown colour but the wire on tube that goes over the seat is a light tan .Is that normal that it is not the same colour ?thanks for any help

Heh Doug. What are you saving the originals for ? Just be careful around them and show them off. A lot better looking than covers that never look original. Wayne

In the late '50s, I put seat covers on the '52 & '53 Mercs that I had. $20 for both seats installed. Real high quality and good looking covers.

I can see seat covers to hide old worn out or stained seats but why. Cover great looking seats. And yes they may look good but they seldom ever look original, Wayne

If you are serious, they are common in Ontario, Canada. I have 2 in my cottage. A black and a brown bear. Wayne

I just had a set of seat covers made for my 29 CCPU. My dog and I drive around all the time, and I didn't want her nails to tear my upholstery. So I went to our local town seamstress with a couple of GI blankets and asked her to make a set of seat covers. She did a beautiful job and it looks like something that would have been done in years back.

In this area you go harvest them yourself. Straight off the bear

For my 31' Tudor, I had two cover dark brown that did not work in our living room . I figured I'd see how they fit in the 31'... Not perfect but good enough and better than tossing them for now...
