Default 1928 Model A Carb and timing.

I was going to rebuild the carb on my car today and found it does not match the gaskets I ordered. Could this be a Model B carb? The old owner said this car always ran better than the roadster he had with a Zenith Model A carb. I do not remember ever working on this carb when he owned it. I found a receipt from his dad for the purchase of a Grose Jet for a Model B carb in 1985.

I also was trying to set the timing after rebuilding the distributor today. I cranked the engine over with the hand crank to find the timing mark on the cam gear. I could not feel the dimple with the timing pin. I used a small screw driver and thought I found it but could not be sure. I have a Lizard cam bore scope and finally found the dimple. It was very shallow and almost not there. I remember years ago that it was hard to find. I lined it up with the timing pin hole as close to center as I could. I set the points and timing. I kept thinking this would be a continual problem and I needed to fix it somehow. I used a drill that just fit into the timing pin hole and drilled out just enough to be able to feel the dimple with the timing pin. The pin does move in when I crank the engine by hand and it gets to the dimple. Is this a safe fix for this problem? I cannot feel any play between the gears. I am fairly sure I replaced the cam gear less than 2000 miles ago. It is a fiber laminated gear.

I am making progress on the car but not getting as much done as I would like.

Thanks

I set the timing on the Fordor using the timing pin last Saturday. Maybe because it's a 92 year old motor, or it was my first time, but I had to really concentrate to feel the dimple in the gear. I pulled the plugs so I could use the fan to turn the motor over. I tried using the crank and my arms weren't no where near long enough.

Thanks for the help. I was able to do this easier with the radiator already out of the way.

Next time when you have it set at top dead center put a small dot of white paint on the top edge of the crank pulley. In the future the dot will let you know when you are getting close to the dimple in the cam gear.

Thank you for the suggestion I really do appreciate it but I thought about that very thing and had already done it.
I messed up my newly painted crank pulley. I know the crank pulley should be engine green but I like black to match the other pulleys.

I have another question regarding the Model B carburetor. I cleaned the carb with carb cleaner and soaked the parts in carb cleaner for 2 days. I sprayed out & ran a tag wire through the jets, tubes, and passages to make sure everything was open & clean. I found one drilled passage open and without a plug in the throttle shaft area. I was able to run the tag wire up the power jet tube and it went up to the hole and I could see the wire around the throttle shaft inside of the hole on the back side of the carb. I think the hole is to allow air to the passage for the power jet tube but I cannot find anything to tell me for sure. The passage looks to have been open so I did not change anything. Before I bolt the carb back on I would like to know if it should be left open or plugged?
I have a few books on Model A's but nothing I have shows this passage. Is there a book on the Model B carb?
I have attached a picture that shows the passage marked with a red arrow.

Thanks again.

That’s a good idea too.
