Default Transmission question M250

I am restoring a 1953 mercury M250 Classic and I am looking for some transmission information. The truck has a 239 flat head V8 with a 4 speed transmission And 4.86 rear end. My first question is on the output it looks like there is a braking device mounted. Basically it is a band that uses a lever beside the gearshift to tighten or loosen. I assume it is some kind of parking brake. I cannot find any information online and it looks like I need to clean it up and adjust it. Or even replace it. Anyone have any information about this part? Also, my differential is leaking. It is a split differential. Is there a oring or gasket or anything that might be gone? How do you split the case to repair?

The drum type parking brake was fairly common on the larger trucks with the 4 speed transmission. The band should have an adjustment feature on it. The lining on the band is basically brake shoe material. You’ll have to have a big truck service facility reline the band if it’s worn through. The steel drum can get damaged if the brake was used with a worn out band. Used drums may be available......if the brake assembly is the same as the regular Ford trucks.

Emergency or parking brake whatever you want to name it is drum and a brake band on
all trucks any make will be on 4 & 5 speed transmission. Smaller trucks with 3 speed or
automatic trans emergency are cable actuated to rear brake drums. Next : rear axle
leak where? top of the list most common would be the pinion seal in which remove drive shaft and U joint yoke replace the seal did this help!!

Would you happen to have any specs or part numbers for this band? I will need to get a pad put in and I would like to be able to tell the shop the thinkness. Also, my springs are pretty rusty. Any suppliers out there that would have these springs?

I wouldn't worry too much about rusty springs even a one yr old new truck they rust.
Just wire brush them paint them black as long as there are no broken leafs. Then if you
have deep pockets for new just google Eaton Spring I think they made yours in the first
place. As far as the emergency lining 'Its like 1/4 to 3/8 thick. Linings are out there, but
what I have done is go to ebay find flat belting maybe tractor supply. I then with 3M contact cemented the belting to the metal band. It can't go anywhere or come out. This belting is used on farm machines. Be advised this brake is NOT for stopping a loaded
truck; or if the brakes fail, If so good luck, better then nothing. Not being funny, but
if that lining is wiped out I would fire the driver !! sam

we work on class 8 trucks
