Default Timing Gear

I decided to check my timing gear. Removed the side inspection cover. Gear looks fine to the naked eye. All smooth square edges with no pieces missing. tried to gently move the gear back and forth and no go. For a comparison, I checked my spare engine (supposedly a good one). It moves forward against good spring tension. I would think this would be correct. I suppose the plunger/spring assembly could be frozen up? I did buy a new one with the laminated gear I bought this week. Any thoughts?

That would make it harder to rotate but I wouldn't think it would have much effect on the slight lateral movement.

Got everything apart and cleaned up. The teeth on the old timing gear look fine. It has a metal hub which seems to be tight. The new gear I bought doesn't. According to all the stuff I read, it is the preferred laminated gear bought from a reliable source so I will install the new gear. Even after cleaning, the old plunger/spring is very rough moving in and out. The new one I bought is smooth which to me should be a good thing so I will use the new one. Am I thinking about all this the right way?

Sounds like you're doing good. I'd recommend checking the lash, should be around .004-.006". If I were to do this again I would put in a metal gear.
