Machine rear main seal info?

I don't weld the tube, I use JB weld and it works good. Cast iron doesn't weld very good with a mig , it can be done but for me JB is safer and easier. Everybody has their own way of doing things.

Ron/Ia, Galley plug may be a better name. I have always heard them refered to as a welch plug and it is certainly not the same as a freeze plug. Welch is a proper name, maybe a mr. Welch designed them. I wouldn't expect to find information in the dictionary on a proper name describing a galley plug. Sorry if I confused you.

First off I call them Welch plugs also, but I think the real name is expansion plugs.
It is like vise grip. Which are locking pliers.

I just checked the size and what I did was leave the original plug in place, and drill through it with a 3/8" bit. 3/8" plugs are available from NAPA.

I just follow Larry's instructions for determining the final position vis-a-vis oil clearance for the pipe and secure it with Loctite or Threadlocker.

There are so many causes for the rear to leak, each time it is posted there would have to be the words "oil leak solved" unless the thread includes the word "solved" you will have a fruitless search.

Unfortunately you are just going to have to search for rear engine leak to find all the threads on the subject, and there are going to be many!

Maybe even start a new thread.

Pete, what is the correct way to install a seal in the full pressure system and which is the right one? I have tried the one piece nitrile seal and the two piece cork and neoprene seal. Both leaked.

Unless I missed it, you never say what you are trying to seal, i.e.- A or B engine .
As Pete says, IF DONE RIGHT, and for full pressured engine.
I have a B with full pressure oiling , for over 12 yrs now....no oil leaks.
I just finished running (for oil pressure/leak check) another B with full oil pressure...no oil leaks !
I used one piece Burtz rear seals in both engines. I only know B and C cranks , and Terry Burtz one piece seals have worked two out of two..thus far...100% . Lucky ..NO ! As done like Pete said.
BTW..I got a major detailed written instruction paper with my seals and discussed every detail with crank man/builder/assembler. Paid off both times,eh

Cloudsnme: I checked on the guy that was making seals for me and he has gone to the great seal factory in the sky.
Basically it was a 2 piece aluminum housing that held a 2 piece rope seal very similar to the 312 Y block one.
I put them in 5 full pressure engines and no leaks with 50 lb of oil pressure.
At one time about 10 years ago there were several other guys making similar seals.

Sure wish I could find something on this oil leak. I read somewhere that a two piece Chevy small block two piece seal works great????

This is a full pressure system and runs at 5 pounds idle 25 pounds raved up a bit. There is no oil pipe.

can someone refresh me what size socket or wrench is needed to remove the rear main cap nuts with engine in the car? there was a thread about this but can't find it.

When tracking down a rear main leak in a Model A, there are several clearances and damages to look at. First, you need to make sure the bearing is not broken and may be missing any parts. Second, the clearance of the bearing to crank should be .0015-.002 no more. Third, the thrust clearance should not be more than .012 or the main will leak. If all these criteria are met the leak should minimal or non existent. If you still have a leak, check the tube and pipe for a blockage. Once you meet these requirements, the leak should be gone or very small.

May be but I have a fully pressurized A engine I am building. Runs great but it seems no one can tell me how to stop a rear main leak. Scat crank, Stipe cam, Scat rods, Piranoi valve system with hardened seats, high compression head, but sad, I still have a rear main leak. Tried both the nitrile seal and the Barnett cork seal. I heard there are Chevy small block seals that fit but where do you get them?

those are for a B motor
