Default Well I found my issue from my last post

Well after digging inti the car I finally found the reason it slowly lost power and died last week. After tearing things apart I found that the large timing gear was missing half of its teeth. Now my next question. Do I need to remove the radiator to change out that gear? How big of a task is it to do this?

Welcome to the world of Model A timing gears! You can replace the timing gear with the radiator in the car if you are patient, but it sure is easier with the radiator out of the way. You will need to support the front of the engine to remove the timing gear cover. Be sure to remove one bolt each side back at the motor mounts, and loosen the other two a bit to allow the engine to "pivot" as you support the front of the engine.

It sure is easier, though. If you don’t have a helper for the hood, you can rig a rope harness to suspend it with an engine hoist.

It appears that you have the stock camshaft nut on your car. This camshaft nut wrench is the best way to get the old nut off and back on after replacing the timing gear. The other method involves a cold chisel and hammer, which is NOT the way to do it.

I have replaced the timing gear on the side of the road with nothing but couple of end wrenches, hammer, and screwdriver. Certainly not the correct way but it got me home.

I seem to recall replacing a timing gear without a lot of trouble many years ago, but forgot how I did it.

Sometimes one has to improvise.

I bought a new gear, new gasket for that inspection window and a new oil pan gasket. Was really hoping to not have to do the whole radiator thing. Will be tearing into it tonight
