Default Terrible mistake at a professional auction

Hi guys. I just saw this on YouTube. Talk about bad mistake. The auction house have described this as a 35 phaeton. Clearly a 36! It looks like a very nice example. Maybe the title in hand says 35??
Anyway the second mistake is the selling price. Why wasn’t there a reserve put on such a nice car? However if it’s a fordbarn member who has scored this car then well done!
Dan.

Holy Moly . Can’t believe no one sitting there, on phone or computer bid that up.
Like you said , someone sure got a deal.

Sounded like it sold for $21K...That's a steal!

Given the problems that the car has, that is a reasonable price. Incorrect interior, non- functioning headlight switch, '35 right taillight stand, sealed beam headlights, many under the hood problems and mistakes. All that from a three minute video. A good car for cruise night but a long way from an authentic car.

Jon,

I agree; the more you look, the less you see to suggest that it was significantly undervalued.

Despite the fact that the car was represented incorrectly and needs work, at $20K it's a great entry level car for someone that just want's to have fun with it. You could not build it for 20.

Well I saw the incorrect steering wheel, but now I have to go back and watch it again. Still a really good price for a nice looking car! (Unless the underside was all rotted out.)
But I can’t believe they could not know it was a 1936, Unless on the title it was actually a 1935 with a 36 front clip and rear fenders. In which case they would have to legally advertise it as a 1935.

These models, even truly nice ones that are correct have taken a nosedive in value in recent years.
In my opinion, this one sold about right. Fun car for not much money.

I agree with Kube. For some reason, four passenger convertibles of the various models/body styles have really slid in value as of late.

I love them and would like to own one.

There is a navy blue '36 phaeton for sale on Long Island, NY. It's been for sale for about 2 years and I think the price is now around $21,000. If it dips below $20K, I may be a player.

I don’t think you can make any conclusions about the price. Bidding reached $20k, and at the end bidding was “closed”, not “sold”. It did not sell, didn’t reach the reserve, at this particular auction, on this day, at this venue.

My friend sold his 1936 phaeton last Fall for $20K to a fellow who is street rodding it now. I posted it on the Barn and the Early Ford V8 website last year, but nobody was interested enough at $25K. I discovered a phaeton is not an ideal car for a 6 foot tall driver.

I'm just a biscuit over six feet and driving the '36 Phaeton sometimes gives me a cramp in my gas pedal leg for being folded up into a hard place. The '35 Fordor has an adjustable front seat and that helps it be more comfortable to drive. Phaeton's are so unfriendly for long distance cruising for many reasons in foul weather especially, but their non-locking doors and no trunk at all are hard to put up with. A fella's luggage can go walk-about at any moment.

As Very Tangled pointed out, lack of leg room.

Can you install an adjustable seat from a 4 door sedan convertible?

Jay, why did the auctioneer bang his gavel and say "Sold, Twenty thousand" at the end if it did not sell?

The lack of seat adjustment and placement of the front seat is the same in phaetons and roadsters in each of the '32 through '36 model years and yet "the lack of leg room" is rarely brought up when the subject is roadsters rather than phaetons.

David, I am 6'2" and have adequate leg room in my '36 roadster. There could be a bit more (leg room) to make me super comfy, but hey, this is a '36 Ford. I get it

I'd never driven a phaeton so can't compare but always trust your knowledge.

The cowl mount radio antenna was the first clue that this car probably had other issues. As the video progressed you could see them. Phaetons have definitely fallen out of favor in the past years.
