I am in the process of restoring a 1930 Coupe, getting ready to install body wood. I have talked myself into and out of the roll down rear window conversion several times. The Coupe does have a rumble seat and it seems like a good modification. My question is the best method for shrinking the package tray. Any advice from someone who has done the job. Or as I haven't purchased any of the parts yet anybody have the assembly from a late '31? Thanks for the input.

Note that on the 1930 coupes there is a flange at the back window that either needs to be cut off or bent down to clear the window so it can be lowered. I think the body on a 1931 coupe does not have this flange. This is why I never changed my coupe because I did not want to cut on the body.

Maybe I'm just confused. The Snyder instruction indicates just moving the package tray mounting tabs. I was of the impression the package tray needed to be narrowed to accommodate the extra space used by the window mechanism and the thicker wood.

If the idea is to communicate with the rear passengers, then you might consider the original idea of an antique talking tube intercom. You have a funnel shape talking device at each end of a flexible tube. Chauffeurs and the rear seat owner could communicate this way. It would be much easier to install and quite unique.

I did what you are thinking about. I cut the tray lengthwise and overlapped the pieces and spot welded it back together. There may have been a few other small modifications that I can't remember. I think the tabs needed to be bent a little. Don't remember. I am six feet tall and needed all the room I could get. All in all it worked just fine. Do it.

Installing the 'roll-down' rear window conversion is a real pain in the butt. But, once the pain of installation is behind you (yes, pun intended) you will be pleased as punch, and jolly with joy for having done so. If you use your rumble seat much at all, you will really appreciate this added deluxe feature.

Sorry I have never done the conversion, I have just seen it on the Snyders website. I thought it might be helpful for you since it includes directions

Since you are doing all the wood in the body, there shouldn't be any problem putting in the roll down kit. Yes there is a metal flange under the bottom of the rear window that must be bent down. You can easily bend with some vise-grips. This is to allow the glass to clear. Your concern about the package tray. Call Bert's and see if they have one for a roll down rear window. They are the same for both 30 and 31. They are narrower than the usual ones so that you have the same amount of space for the seat to go back. They also have the holes punched in the metal for the regulator to fit. I have seen these package trays in Flea markets and they don't sell very fast because most people do not know what they are for. Keep looking and you will find one. Best to find one for the roll down window than cutting up the original one.

MAFCA's - How To Restore Your Model A - Volume 4 - has a 6 page " do it yourself" article on putting a roll down rear window in coupe. This was written (1988) before the kits were available and might help you in your installation. It takes a fair amount of work but is well worth it - great for ventilation on hot days.

Communication to rumble seat passengers would be ZILCH ! It's hard enough to even talk to your passenger, in a Coupe, with both windows down.
If your passengers need to p**, jist knock on the window.
