Default 1929 Sport Coupe Body question

I’m repairing rusty rear quarter panels and wheel wells and have run into a puzzle.

The quarter patch panel fits quite well if I move it up a bit ,but that leaves a gap at the bottom such that a half inch of subrail is exposed. If I move the patch panel down so that the bottom lip is level with he bottom of the subrail, the patch panel is about a half inch too long - it sticks out this much on either the door pillar or rear wheel well.

The picture of this same rear quarter panel on a restored ‘29 Sport Coupe shows the bottom of the patch panel sitting above the running board apron and the subrail is exposed. (This is hard to see because of the reflections in the glossy paint). Furthermore, the bottom of the rear quarter panel is a bit higher than the bottom of the door.

Are the bottoms of the rear quarter panel and door supposed to line up exactly, or is the bottom of the quarter panel supposed to be a little higher than the door bottom, as shown by the pic of the restored car ??

Many thanks
Jim

Bad angle on photo I think hard to tell my standard coupe lines up closer.

Yes - that pic wasn’t the best. I’ve since received another, better pic that shows good alignment between the bottoms of the quarter panel and the door and the subrail is not visible.

I also found the rusted lower quarter panel I had cut out; holding it back in place clearly shows the quarter panel originally covered the subrail.

So, the patch panels I have are lousy fits and will require major modification to look decent. This level of body work is beyond me.

I need to locate quarter patch panels that are a better fit…..

Welcome to the world of substandard reproduction parts. The bottom edge of the quarter panel has or should have a lip or a short 90 degree edge. The lip should fit under the bottom outer edge of the subrail. Many of these old cars have had repairs done after so many years.
