Default Cylinder head install video series

I've posted the last video in my series on installing a new cylinder head. The series is oriented toward those installing a HC head for the first time. I had the idea to do the series six months ago, but I had no idea it would take this long or wind up totaling almost two hours of film.

Topics covered include:
  • Clean the threads and the block surface
  • Check for damage and repair minor damage
  • Check for blocked coolant passages
  • Check for flatness with a precision straightedge
  • Check piston-to-head clearance
  • Check distributor fit
  • Painting the head
  • How different gaskets behave differently
  • Why you would or wouldn't bottom out the studs
  • What you might put on the studs before installation
  • Torque values and tightening sequence
  • What to do with the ignition cable clamp
  • Studs vs bolts for the water pump
  • RTV vs copper gasket for the water outlet
  • Order of assembly
  • Heat cycle and initial re-torque

I'm going to take a break from making videos for a while and just drive the car.

I just watched a few of these videos, and I must say I was impressed. Both the photography and explanations were very well done, and you’ve done a service to our hobby by posting them……thanks!

For obvious reasons, I was most interested in video 3of 3. The engine sounded good.

Right, understandable. This is the blem 7:1 head that I bought from you in October. No problems so far. I'm using the W16Y plugs you recommended, gapped to .035. Best 509G gasket with no copper spray on the head side. New chromoly studs and new nuts.

One thing I don't talk about in the video, because it's a bit of an experiment, is that I'm using ARP Ultra-Torque lube on the head nuts and torquing to 50 ft-lbs. So far I've been pleased with the performance. The Graphtite gasket fully broke in after just one heat cycle – no need to take it out on long drives. I also had no problems using the copper gasket for the water outlet.

I had to put it back up on jack stands to adjust the steering play after that video was taken, so consequently I haven't taken it out for a road test yet. Just gone up and down the driveway checking the brakes and transmission. I'm playing it very safe with the spark advance. The Nu-Rex centrifugal advance goes to 29°, which is on the high side, so I'm keeping it retarded about 10° overall until I have more time to road test it.
