Default 1952 Ford Crestline Sunliner Convertible

Pappy has a 1952 Convertible that is in "project" shape and we're trying to get some idea of value. We've had a local offer of $1000 but another suggested price was $5000. We're settling his estate and have an abundance of all things Ford to find new homes for...don't want to give this one away but don't want to overestimate it's actual value. Any thoughts?

Personally, I would take the local offer if money in hand.

IF I had the dough and was looking for that particular year/project....I would feel that between $1000 to $2000 would be a fair asking and expect the owner to be open to offers (although the lower side expect an "NO" or "standing firm at $1000).

1952 -1954 Fords were never really in demand as high dollar collectibles. Sadly, 1940 and 50's cars are not increasing in value and the demand is much less as demographics are changing. Ask yourself, "What would I pay for that car in its present condition and would the restoration costs greatly exceed its restored value?" It' going to be a money pit. You may be better off parting it out if you have the time and storage available.

The convertible top frame, motor, screw jacks and switch, could bring upwards of $1,500 to $2,000, if not broken. If it has power windows, add another $300 to $400. Power seat, add another $500, if it is a 4 way seat. Accessory steering wheel - $200 to $300. Power steering, add another $600 to $1,200.

Good complete convertible parts cars, are hard to come buy.

Call the guy who said it's worth $5000 and tell him to come and get it. See how fast he shows up to get it.

My car insurance company, (Hagerty), issues a periodic valuation of the vehicles they cover. My '47 convertible value was adjusted recently. It is for sale, and provides an independent figure to allow a prospective buyer a reliable estimate of the asking price.

We decided to take the local offer for just the car. We do have additional "new" parts for it that we'll sell separately. Thanks for the help

Restoring any convertible is a lengthy and costly project, requiring a great deal of patience. I spent in excess of $20K to restore my '47, not counting three years of my time. It was a whole lot better condition than the '52 in your photos. Unless you love the car, I would part it out and look for a much better candidate.

Sadly, she looks like a money pit.

Unfortunately, our hobby/passion is suffering (from what I call) generational decline.

As each generation approaches geezerhood the values of the cars of our youth decline.

I would have given anything to have that little shoebox I have. Even though it’s in excellent condition as a driver it really isn’t worth much. It’s a member of the family that my daughter grew up with and drove. She wants it when I pass on for that reason. Unfortunately, her and her husband are mechanically challenged and are going to have to find someone that can perform the yearly maintenance.

Project cars are a hard sell right now if they need a complete restoration. I'm seeing a lot out there for months or years with no takers. Yes there are a lot of repop parts available now that weren't there in the 1970s but are becoming insanely expensive (example; a pair of Country Squire scripts for a '51 is $400) The cost of restoring one such as your '52 will be more than the car is worth. Today it's best to find a nice older restoration or good "driver" car. And with the possibility of gasoline not being around after 15 years or so is another thing to look at.
