oil filter flow volume
All right , this is a topic that can go many ways but it is just meant as stated. I know we've cover full flow verses bypass filters and high volume verses stock oil pumps. So this is not a question on those topics. Would it be beneficial to open up the restrictor in a bypass filter system and run a high volume oil pump? In my simple mind it seems you would clean and cool more oil faster. This was just something that came to me while cleaning engine parts. Oh that thinking outside the box can get you into trouble.

Re: oil filter flow volume
Just for your information the stock bypass oil filter system passes 5 qts. of oil in 11 minutes at idle speed as measured.

Re: oil filter flow volume
Ford engineers did know what they were doing, even back then.

Re: oil filter flow volume
I would think that enlarging that orifice would lower your oil pressure reading.

Re: oil filter flow volume
Don't think the original system did any oil cooling. Now if the bypass hole was increased in size that would create a reduction in oil pressure. Using a high volume pump to correct that problem should work. But would the original oil filter canisters be able to hold back the additional flow and increased pressure without the top lid gasket leaking?

Re: oil filter flow volume
My 2 8BA's (CND engines, 50 & 51) do not have ANY restrictor on the input side of the oil filter. None, Zero, only the normal diameter of the fittings and the tubing, there is not one attached at the block. The only restrictor is in the standpipe in the canister (one small hole) which is the downstream side of the filter. The filter canister is holding full oil pressure. That said the seal is a ONE TIME use only or the canister will leak.

Re: oil filter flow volume
I've put engines together without an inlet restrictor, a fresh motor will have about 5-10lbs at a hot idle, put the factory restrictor in and it jumps up to 25lbs. Never tried opening up the orifice on the outlet.
