Rebuild kit 221

Anyone have ideas for source for a rebuild kit for a 221? Best we can find is over $2600 from Egge. That sounds a little high! Your thoughts please. Bill

Just for parts like valves, Pistons, bearing, gaskets, rings, ect......? Call Van Pelt Sales or Michael Driskell at Third Gen Automotive. Both guys are here on the barn.

You might list what parts are included for $2600. If it was everything I would replace it doesn't sound out of reason. I've never rebuilt a flathead in the last 5 years with machining that was less then 4k. I realize work costs less in different parts of the country.

Understand that is parts only. No machine work. Same kit for a 239 can be bought for $900.00 my rebuilder tells me.

W1964, exactly which 221 are you rebuilding? There is three basic versions.

Frankly, Brian, I don’t know. It’s an 81A if that’s the answer. My Coupe is titled as a 1939 Deluxe. I find so many things common to a 38, I call it a 1938 1/2. It definitely is an early 39 based serial number. Tell me what specifically to be looking for, please.

81A, cool! Next questions for a positive id, how long [roughly will do] is the crank snout? Where the front pulley attaches. Single pulley sheave or two? If single, does the boss extend forward of the pulley?

81A version of the 221 will be the cheapest to buy parts for.

Suppliers tend to sell different packages of “engine kits”. We decided some time ago to just put together the group of parts that is specific to the customer’s engine......and his/her specific parts request. Plus, there are price variances in bearings for example. I can only imagine what someone would get for only $900 worth of flathead engine rebuild parts.

Pistons, rings, main bearings, rod bearings, cam bearings, all the various valve components, timing gears, oil pump, overhaul engine gasket set.......and all the various other bits and pieces that may be necessary. Obviously, you would need to know what the finished bore size will be, and the finished crank journal sizes will be.

Will you want adjustable lifters? How about water pumps, carburetor, fan belts, starter, new studs or head bolts, etc. many things can go into a rebuild package. This is why we figure out things with our customer and then build a specific package for him which we discount as a group. Just how we do it.......

I think the most important thing is to first figure out what you NEED to buy - versus what can be reused. Also, depending on the condition of what you have and the experience/skills of your rebuilder, the parts list and specific combination of parts can change dramatically. Hopefully you have a rebuilder who is experienced in flatheads, has the necessary equipment (some of it is specialized - especially in the valve train area) - and knows how to use it. Once you know what you have and what can be reused, then talk to Mac, Red's Headers, Third Gen, etc. . . I'd stick with ONE supplier for everything - and not mix-match components from all over (since you're new to this).

Feel free to PM me once you have your ducks in a row - be happy to provide some perspective to what you're undertaking and things to potentially think or be aware of.

For the last couple FH's I had built I sourced the majority of my parts from Baxter Ford Parts in Lawrence Kansas. Good quality parts.

w1964, i have seen kits on e bay from $1200-$1700, check it out. I'd want to know who makes the components though.

Thanks to all for good advice. I was able to order parts Al a carte from Van Pelt and Joe's at considerable savings from the quote from Egge. We are fortunate to have Van Pelt and Joe who specialize in Early Ford parts. They are great people to work with - like the good folks on this forum.
