1953 f-100 transmission
Anyone change to different transmission in A 53/54/55/56 f-100, what problems did you encounter ? I can see that the clutch linkage set up would be A problem ,Also the small pattern for A transmission on the bell housing , and the bell housing it self has the motor mounts cast into it , just thinking maybe A S-10 trans my be in the future ,or some other trans, 3 speed with OD, I would like to find an original overdrive trans that was an option on the 53/55 f-100, probably impossible to find, thank you

Re: 1953 f-100 transmission
The overdrive transmission used for F100 applications may have been the T-85 R11C which is a heavier duty overdrive transmission. I see these on flea-pay now and then. Ford had several transmissions and bell housings for the 53 F100 pickups. It depends on what transmission is has now as to what might work with that bell. The Ford 259 series with the R10 overdrive might work OK for a flathead. These were lighter duty as was the T86 R10 transmission but I think they came along in the Y-block era. The 259 series are like the ones used in the shoe box Fords but they have the later gears.

Re: 1953 f-100 transmission
Thanks, for your reply , the problem that I see is on my 3 speed column shifted trans ,light duty , is the clutch linkage bolts directly to the side of the transmission , some other transmission may not have this provision.

Re: 1953 f-100 transmission
Shoebox Ford cars also had an appendage for the clutch mechanism but a person could fabricate a bracket that would bolt on to connect the clutch bellcrank.

Re: 1953 f-100 transmission
Unless he is prepared to make all sorts of modifications (bell housing, clutch release mechanism, rear support, cross member, etc) the only transmission that makes sense to install would be the correct Ford overdrive transmission that was optional in the F-100 pickups from 1953 to 1956. These will have the longer input shaft with the 1-3/8” diameter splines. They will also have the unique boss on the side cover for his clutch release bracket, plus the correct overall length and output shaft splines.
Yes they can be hard to find but I know that they are out there still as we’ve had people send them to us for rebuilding.
