Screw type air compressor
Anyone have experience with older Ingersol Rand screw type air compressors?
Its a diesel powered 100 cfm screw compressor and its low on oil in the compressor head Local service shop quoted almost $500 for a 5 gallon pail of oil. Its got 4000 hrs on it and doubt its worth $500. For a couple reasons im hesitant of putting out the money for the oil, is i have no idea how low it is, and could be to the point of just needing a full oil change or just needing topped off. Is there any other types of oil that could be substituted for what the dealer is trying to push? . |

Re: Screw type air compressor
start googling I-R compressors. may be surprised at the info out there especially if you have a model number. I'm not surprised at $100 a gal for oil, especially if it is a silicone type. also try I-R customer service

Re: Screw type air compressor
Thanks, i tried that and keeps taking me back to the synthetic oil.
What i was hoping to find was something cheap that would be compatible with whats in it to top it off and run it for awhile to see if the machine is worth doing a full service on. The other thing is, i have no idea what the company had been putting in it to start with judging by its overall condition |

Re: Screw type air compressor
Sawmill I worked at in west NY had an IR Twistair on 3 phase power. It passed oil, had to add a gallon plus 2 times a week. A IR tech was contacted about overhaul, it was a replacement situation so just continued running like that 50 hours + a week for a couple more years. Was adding Mobil 10w hydraulic oil same as rolling equipment, that would have been in the 70’s so maybe later units are high requirements?

Im going to try and drain some of it out and see if the 10 weight will jive with whats in it. Then nake a decision on if the machine is worth putting any money into it. |

Re: Screw type air compressor
As I recall, the proprietary HVAC compressor oil was mainly mineral oil with some colorants and unique inert ingredients to facilitate tracing analysis. Should a compressor fail, oil analysis would show whether the factory authorized oil was used. Incorrect oil = voided warranty. Needless to say, the oil was a big margin contributor and was carefully defended from counterfeiting. YMMV.
