Default Twin Turbo Flathead

I thought Old Ron and some of the other members might be interested in my newest project. Its a 49 Ford truck block, 276 cubic inch, twin dodge turbos running 5 psi of boost. Its in my son's 28 model A roadster. It idles smooth and runs real strong. Thanks for all the technical articles I found here on the Ford Barn.

So, what kind of RPMs are we talking about before you can sense any real boost? Does it still sound like a flathead Ford? DD

Very cool. The normal flathead sound must be gone but it is still cool.

Hey Cory,
Looks great, thanks for sharing. Do you have a video of running(sound) to share ?
I've often thought of doing turbo on my '32 B, but you have done more than just think about it ! Are you running one carb or more ?. I suppose that it would be hard to hook up to more than one carb, eh ?

Looks to me like he built a 'air box' on top of dual 94's.

What I don't know is whether or not he has done any customization to the carbs to ensure that adequate fuel is available under boost . . . same goes with timing.

Given his specific turbos and the design of the system, would be nice to know when he sees boost (at what RPM) and is he getting enough of it early enough to make much of a difference in HP?

Would be nice to know the details of the setup?

Yep, B&S that would be great information. I tried running an old K&F blower on a flathead back in the 60's, but couldn't get it to run right. Never figgered it out.???

671 is a lot of blower for a flattie...
471 or even a 371 should deliver enough if youre not doing real serious quarter mile runs.
I´m to curious on how well that setup works.
Wanting to go with 97´s one on each side out at the turbos would look different.

I see that you are running two of the"old style" helmet air cleaners, one on each side. Conventional wisdom says these are restrictive on a normally aspirated engine; I wonder how much they restrict the turbo-charged setup? Perhaps you have made some modifications that will make them work better? It is a nice setup though; how about some pictures of the exhaust manifolds/turbo-mounting?

Thanks for all the interest in my homemade twin turbo set up. I'll try to answer all the questions. This is the 4th turbo set up I've built. The first was for my dad's 28 roadster- pick-up. It used a Corvair turbo and sidedraft carb. Ran good, he used to bragg about how it went up hills. He ran it for 3 years till the rods loosened up. I will try to find pictures. The 2nd was a V8-60 with a single Dodge turbo in my son's 28 highboy roadster. The 3rd is an off topic Chevy 355 with a single turbo in my Model A truck . The turbos on my twin setup are each off a 136 cu. in. Dodge 4 cyl. They are small and spool up fast on the 276 cu. in. v8 . There is not much noticeable lag. We noticed they do quiet the engine down and seem to make it idle smoother. If you floor the gas, the needle on the boost gauge follows the needle on the tach. I'll try to get moore specific information , it's hard for me to watch the road, tach, and boost gauge at the same time. The carbs are two late 94's with no. 57 jets and 5in.Hg power valves. I use a Holley electric fuel pump and a boost sensitive fuel pressure regulator . The distributor is a Chevy with vacuum advance and modified curve. 17* mechanical advance , 9* vacuum advance, and 4* initial advance. We had trouble with the restrictive air cleaners in the past. Went to K+N filters and problem solved.

That is sharp! How about a side picture of the exhaust setup?

Yeah, I would have liked to have seen a closeup of the exhaust manifolds/headers. "Junior Member"; probably just came on here to "show the boys", which was appreciated. Or maybe he "cooked" a couple of pistons.
