Default KR Wilson Number For Spring Spreader ?

Does anyone have the KR Wilson part number for the leaf spring compressor for the rear transverse spring on a '40. I have to pull an axle housing and need the tool for releasing the tension on the spring. I see one on E Bay # A 321 but they only state its good for Model A's. ?????? Thanks, Phil Swanson

Phil, there's nothing "fancy" about a spring spreader for a '40. They're very easily made with a suitable piece of tubing and some stout threaded bar. If you can't find a specific one, you could consider making one.

For instance, I made one using 25mm square tubing with a 2mm wall. That leaves a 21mm hole up the middle, and I used 20mm threaded bar to provide the jacking effect.

Here's a thread from when I used it on a reversed eye 32 spring.
https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=221679
The setup in a 40 is simpler because the spring is straight and not reversed eye (normally).

Mart.

Phil, Mart is correct. Making one is cheaper than buying one. It's one of those items you don't use very much. Any chance someone near you can loan you one?

Here's more spring spreader info.

Phil........This picture shows the spreader needed for a Model A. The difference on an "A" is that the spring sits directly OVER the axle, and there needs to be a means to make that diversion over (or around) that center BANJO section, which is not necessary on the later rears with the spring sitting BEHIND. I have an old Blackhawk porta-power I use to stretch the spring if its still in the car. You might be able to borrow one from somebody.

If the rear end is out from under the car I just put two "big" C-clamps on the spring and remove the center bolt. Then take the leaves a part by releasing the tension from the spring stack with the C-clamps. Then I can easily stretch the main leaf by hand to remove it, there is not much tension on the main leaf.

To reinstall it. Compress the springs back together with a piece of all-thread in the center hole using good quality nuts to draw the stack together. Clamp the stack with the C-clamps, remove the all-thread and stick the center bolt back in. Its about the only good way I've found to do a reverse-eyed spring where there is nothing to push against to spread it.

One method is to use angle iron brackets on each end for the spreader bar to push against. Mart has some photos posted in the link he provided earlier in this thread.

Have you ever had an issue with those ends wanting to jump out when under pressure? I think I would want to put a metal strap over each end to prevent this. That would scare me as is. Thanks, Phil Swanson

No , I never have . The nuts keep it from coming out on the sides .
I had my rear spring out of the car recently for almost 2 months , lying on the floor of my garage (under pressure) . No problem . It is not as much pressure as you might think . - F F

This picture gives a better idea of what JSeery is talking about with the angle iron brackets. DD

How long would you cut the square tube for a 40? I would like to be able to use it on the front or rear. Thanks..

In my case 35-1/4". I have a shorter piece of tubing I used for the 40 front spring. My goal was to have the tubing as long as possible to minimise stickout of the threaded bar.

Would it be possible to have a length that would work for the front as well as the rear?? Maybe 32" or so ?

This is a variation on the same theme that I made for normal and reverse eye springs. All from bits and pieces I had lying about.
