Fuel Pump push rod bushing

Hi Gents
I'd like to know how to remove and then reinstall the fuel pump pushrod bushing?
I want to remove it to be sure that the oil gallery is clean.
This is in a model 59 block.

It is a very thin wall part as you know. I machined a special driver that would pilot inside for a good length and just fit inside the diameter of the hole in the block. The bushing is driven straight down into the cam bearing cavity. I can't remember if the bearing was in or out.

jim is this in your assembled engine if not I used a threaded rod put a small washer and a nut on the top the rod comes thrugh the bottom where the bearing was usesme method as top and tighten up botton nut it will pull the bushing down

Kahuna, Is it really necessary to remove that bushing in order to clean out the oil gallery?
I am just thinking you might be better off just leaving it alone, unless it's "worn out" , which I doubt.

I like to take the bushing out so you can get a brush through the galley to make sure nothing is hiding behind or around the bushing. It's easy enough to knock out with the proper bushing driver or a tool made for the job. Never have run across one that is worn out.

Everdently you have the engine stripped to nothing. You have to remove the rear cam bearing. You make a driver that slides down the bushing a good inch, make the top of the driver just a couple .002 smaller than the outside of the new bushing, make a nice square edge where the driver hit the bushing. That is a very thin bushing and if you have a sloppy driver you'll will crumple the bushing have way down the hole and have a hell of a job getting it out. Walt

Removing the bushing is a risky business, make sure you have a replacement before you start. Most guys don't remove them, clean the tube with a rifle brush 30 cal works great.

I made a driver using a 3/8" bolt, cut down the head so it will go through the block that holds the bushing. The shank of the bolt goes through the bushing, use a punch to drive it into the cam area... I've removed a few and have not ruined one yet.

I reuse them cause the first one I bought- from a reputable supplier- was worse than the old one I removed. The ones I've seen don't seem to wear much. I have two or three around from ruined blocks, just in case.

Ron, I must disagree with you... There's usually lots of crap in the oil galleries- I wouldn't be comfortable not cleaning every nook and cranny, and this is a big one...

I stand corrected, only changed one and it wasn't anything I'd want to do again. However if you've never done this before, it's a great learning curve. I have the rifle brish on a drill and it works quite well along with a good flush.
