Default Battery Size for '36 Ford Woodie

Good morning all. I'm a Model A guy once again trying to help my friend with a 1936 Ford Woodie. Thanks for your help in the past as I'm not familiar with the V-8 era cars.

We are trying to get a new battery for his Woodie. My group 1 Battery out of my '30 Town Sedan is too tall and hits the floor.

A '36 can use a taller battery with a custom made floor cover to clear the battery posts, or, an Optima either with a lowered section installed on the tray, or mounted on its side.

I think the old size was "2L". I have found that size "1" batteries are not really up to cranking a flathead. I think lowering the tray and using an Optima has a lot of merit, unless it is a show car only.

I don't think the Group 2LF Battery, which is correct for your '36 Woodie, is manufactured any longer....

Thanks guys. I guess that explains why we can't find the proper battery. What do the guys with "Points Cars" do.

Take a tape measure, measure the battery space in the car, then click on the link below for battery measurements and size numbers. Two minutes on Google.......

I had the same problem with a 36 sedan we just finished-we made a spacer for the floor battery cover plate. used a piece of 3/4 plywood cut to fit the existing metal cover, painted it black and hid it under the floor mat. Lowering the battery box makes it show below the frame which looks awful to us. we did stay with 6 volts

You can go with a 2HF battery if you use a raised cover like Larry Cossar makes, or used to make.

Thanks TagMan for the info. Unfortunately all 6 volt batteries listed are too tall and would hit the cover. The stock battery is only ~7 ¾" tall, including the posts. We're looking into the raised cover that John suggested. Then we will recheck your list for one that will fit (I hope).
