Door nail and panel removal
My wife and I made door and interior panels for the ccpu last winter...
Now the door latch on the passenger side won't release from the inside handle. The latch fully retracts when using the outside handle but not when using the inside handle.. So it needs some work. I can't seem to get the door panels off intact. It looks like I'll just have to pull the nails through the material and then make new panels.. Unless someone has another way to do it. I bought a set of tools like the one's Mitch suggested here: http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=195518 But no luck. Its a 29 ccpu and the doors are steel, and this is what the nail and retainer look like.. Thanks, Randy

Re: Door nail and panel removal
I did find an old original brass clip in the door bottom....I bet they were easier to remove...
I decided not to use screws as the old replacement panels had, and went with the reproduction ring nail and clip.. They are very secure, but apparently impossible to remove... Tell the dog that the sumbody was me!

Re: Door nail and panel removal
Those are more modern fasteners and you should be able to remove the panels just the same as using the original spring fasteners. I use a 3 pronged food serving fork, slide it between the panel and the door right at each fastener and pull outward. I immediately return the fork to the kitchen drawer and my wife has never caught me after having my original Model A for 28 years!

Re: Door nail and panel removal
I had to remove mine and they are like the picture. Came with the LB kit. For the life of me cannot remember how I did it. Maybe a call to LB will help.

Re: Door nail and panel removal
I called Snyder's. We talked about the door nails for several minutes and we both agreed that there is no good way to remove them....Apparently they are designed so the nail will only go one way...
I will say that they hold very well! 19 in each door....overkill maybe.....

Re: Door nail and panel removal
I would personally go to a more original type just so removal in the future would be easier. Snyders sells them. Just bought some spares last month.

Re: Door nail and panel removal
Could you use one of the tools sold for removing door panel clips and get under and lift out the button and nail at the same time. It might destroy the button but same the door panel.

All the vendors apparently sell the same Snyder's produced part, but the prices vary quite a bit...over twice Snyder's price in some cases....and it takes 19 per door...they cost as much as the material to make a door panel... I wasn't able to find any with the brass insert, like the originals....

Re: Door nail and panel removal
Take the "R" off the catalog number you are using and you will see these in the Snyder's catalog....
https://fordbarn.com/forum/attachment...1&d=1464380314 These clips are 15 cents each and are used on my late '31 Slant Windshield 4 Door Sedan. Maybe your A used a different type. Last edited by Utopia Texas; 05-27-2016 at 03:25 PM. |

Re: Door nail and panel removal
Yes your's are different...I wish mine were 15¢ each....
I may use a hole punch and cut around the heads rather than tearing the panelboard, then use a washer when I put it back together... Or I'll use the old screws and cup washers...and then eventually make new panels and use more ring nails....good winter project..!

Re: Door nail and panel removal
the reproductions your using are designed to hold the nail permanently. Most roadsters & phaeton's use them also and use about 6-10 per door so yes yours are overkill, "LOL". they are without a doubt really hard to remove with out messing up the panel. Best way is to get a small flat putty knife behind and slowly pry away but no guarantee on that either.

Re: Door nail and panel removal
Please don't hold me to this but I think, and that can be dangerous, I used am upholsters tack removable tool, has a V shape end and got behind the white part and popped it out. Once out the nail is loose. It swear it can be done

Re: Door nail and panel removal
Could you drill through the head of the nail/button so that the head pops off Kind of like drilling out a pop rivet? That way you sacrifice the nail, but save the door panel.

Re: Door nail and panel removal
I haven't removed door panels, but I have a tack remover that I bought from Classtique, and I was thinking that would be my tool of choice.

Re: Door nail and panel removal
I have a Snap on panel removal tool but I think it is too thick.....I will look at finding an upholsterers tack remover or perhaps make a tool...
The plastic ones I bought nearly worked...so I will try something similar and go after the socket and not the nail... Thanks for all the ideas so far....!
