I have to wonder...was the engineer aware of the history or did he come up with this excellent idea on his own in a historical vacuum?
And...note that the degree of taper at the tip has been enhanced a little over stock Model A-B, almost exactly like Marco's suggestion on helping the pin find the inadequate hole in most repro timining gears... |

I actually have a similar device that screws into a Model A timing cover hole that is spring loaded. As you rotate the engine over, a portion of the pin is exposed with red. When the dimple in the gear slides under the spring loaded pin, the red area of the pin disappears and you have found TDC.

The pin does not set up spark timing as it does on our Model As. This pin immobolizes the crankshaft so that the cam sprockets can be lined up with the crank. It doesn't get anywhere near a timing gear or sprocket.

A machinist buddy of mine made me a nice brass threaded and knurled pin that looks similar to this TDC tool. It is for me to use as an alignment tool when I put on the back horn covers of the Aoogah horns. It works great !! He must have been bored at work one day...

I once had a whistle with a rubber hose to pop onto compression guage adapter. It had a LOW note as piston slowly came up on compression. After it reached TDC, it changed to a HIGH note! Great fun when you were able to rock it back & forth! Somewhere, I saw a supplier selling a timing pin "tool" that made a "click" when the dimple hole arrived at the "scene!" Bill W.

This pin is used on Ford Focus engine,it locks the crankshaft while you set up yhe timing components.If you forget to take it out you have problems.
