Before the fuel pump makes the most sense to me. Keeps the debris out of the fuel pump and subsequently out of the carburetor.

I like the later pumps with the glass bowl. There is a paper filter that fits them with a spring to hold the filter up in place. I don't have the filter number with me. G.M.

My buddy in the garage business here tells me to put the electric pump closer to the tank.I have several English cars with electric pumps. They are all located near the tank. James

All of the electric fuel pump instructions say to mount the pump close to the tank and inatall a fuel filter before the pump or it will void the warranty.

I have a 36 with a later glass bowl pump with a napa #3039 filter. You need to open up the hole slightly as it wont fit over the nub in the center of the pump. You also need a spring under it and a proper cork gasket in there. I also have a chrome metal glass tube filter in the line inbetween the pump and carb. They stop ALL crap coming through the line, OMO. ken ct.

I would surely rather have filter in place before fuel pump but the issues I had was rubber diaphragm pieces plugging up carburetor, glass bowl and filter before fuel pump were clean. I had this happen twice two different fuel pumps and two different carburetors. When I bought a new Stromberg from Uncle Max I knew I didn't want to have to take it apart so I am running fuel filter before carb and no trouble for couple years now. Not running a rebuilt fuel pump anymore either got an Airtex/Carter from Napa and must be ethanol proof so mayby someday I will get brave again and remove filter ahead of pump.

Ken, do you have any problems with the later glass bowl pump as far as pumping too much fuel? I reduced the size of my jets and still am getting black plugs. May go to hotter plugs.

It might look funny, but I have clear filters, both in front of and behind my fuel pump. It sure helps you know if you are getting fuel or not. Besides it cleans, twice as well ! (maybe)

if you run a filter between pump & carb make sure its plumed with steel lines do not use rubber. rubber lines can fail causing a fire if a rubber line leaks on the suction side it will onley suck air not squirt fuel.
