Cool Sedan converted to pickup ?

Hey, has anyone head about, your have seen a Sedan converted to a pickup ? I was told in the 40's and 50's, they would buy a new ford and take the old one and covert it to a pickup . It would have the sedan back window and a home made box and tailgate.

It was fairly common during the war, they could get more gas rationing stamps for a truck. I've never seen the pictures of the one my great-grandpa had, but I heard the stories about it,and I've seen several in later years.

I had a 34 Plymouth somebody had done that to years ago, with a Dodge pickup box. It was going to need too much work, money, at the time so I sold it for what I had in it. It looked hokey, but it worked for somebody I suppose. Had suicide doors I thought was cool. But it wasn't a Model A.

yup thats what I've always heard too - truck could be used for commercial purposes (aka your job) so you NEEDED more gas to survive. Theres been quite a few on the forum.

couldn't even imagine what issues we would have today if we had gas rationing...

my uncle worked for a ford dealer from about 36 until he went in army in I think 42 he started as a "gopher" and became a salesman when ever we look at a new pickup he always says you couldint sell them things when I was selling cars the farmers would buy a model a roadster or touring for 10 bucks and chop the back off and put a wood bed on it nobody wanted the open cars back then

My God father had one back in the 60-70's. Got to ride in the bed several times when I was a kid. I think it might have been a cut down slant windshield.

First A I bought was a conversion, did not know it till one of the club members pointed it out. All the body work was leaded. Looked pretty good.

It was common in Australia, as a lot of cars were phaetons in the 20's. You would remove the rear panels from behind the front seat and then fashion a tray to suit your needs. It is still common to see these as restored utes at shows now. I don't know if it was to get more fuel during rationing or not.

The Grapes of Wrath...

Here's a thread discussing the sad end to the car from the film... beginning with a link to the auction flyer for the "sympathetically restored" Hudson Super-Six... I really got my fur up over this one... :/

A nice thing about the sedan converted pickup is that it should have more room and comfort than the factory job.

Not really, Tom. The bed is still in the same location, so you cannot sit back any further.

I have one that was hot rodded back in the 60's. I'm guessing prior to that it was a depression era gas ration job since it came out of rural Montana.
