Necessity is the mother of invention
I've gotten my '51 Ford with the '51 Merc engine back on the road and after a couple of minor glitches, everything seems fine. However, I still can't find an air cleaner I like to use with the 2GC that's on it now. The original oil bath won't fit and as we all know, the little helmet styles are very restrictive. I did have 2 of them however, so with the help of a piece of 1/4" all-thread and a chrome acorn nut, I came up with this. It seems to work real well.
And, no, I'm not gonna keep it; I'm still looking for something better. In the interim, this is probably better than nothing. Last edited by tubman; 07-23-2017 at 08:19 PM. |

Re: Necessity is the mother of invention
I use these tall filters. Available for 2GC. May not be to your liking or wallet.

Re: Necessity is the mother of invention
I use a K&N filter that is 4" diameter, the element is 4" tall. Fits 2 5/8" carb.
Bad part; I made an adapter from exhaust tubing that is sort of elaborate for the 2GC. It does fit a Ford carb. PM me if you want the number of the filter. I'll be able to respond early August. Karl |

Re: Necessity is the mother of invention
I'm really looking for a unit that's about 10" in diameter that isn't a 4-BBL unit with an adapter to make it fit a two barrel. (Lotsa junk out there). At this point, I am really leaning towards making an adapter to let me run the original oil bath unit. Does anybody out there have an opinion on the air flow on these units?
(Karl - I was thinking along the same lines about an adapter made from exhaust tubing but I thought it would be pretty simple. When you get back and have the time, I'd like to see what you made.) Last edited by tubman; 07-24-2017 at 05:59 AM. |

Re: Necessity is the mother of invention
I have made air filters by cutting a piece of aluminum to fit the carb and a selected element. Most of the time I made the top also and polished it. You could find a 4bbl filter in the size you like and just make the base. One made to fit a race track shaped filter would suit me. You might also cut down a stock base as the shape flows air better.

Re: Necessity is the mother of invention
Tubman,
Don't laugh but I've made adapters to mate Rochesters to what ever A C the customer supplied from PVC plastic plumbing fittings. There are a bunch of different sizes and with my handy dandy lathe I can fit up anything ( so far ). The nice thing is this stuff can be glued up quick. It is easily bored , turned, milled then painted black. I whipped up a base from PVC and used a top from a '36 standard A C with a WIX 46172 element, very business looking. Charlie ny |

Re: Necessity is the mother of invention
Charlie,
The PVC pipe is a good idea, since 2 5/8" exhaust tubing probably isn't that easy to come by. Now that I have something on there, I'll see what I can come up with. Some good ideas here. I do think the idea of using the bottom of an existing unit rather than a flat plate is probably worthwhile airflow-wise. Tubman |
