Default 37 or 38-39 fender skirts

I just got a set of 37 or 38-39 fender skirts with no hardware on them. They were advertised as 37 skirts. I have read on this site that the 37 skirts are longer than the 38-39 skirts. Can someone give me measurements on 37 skirts and on 38-39 skirts? I'd like to know what I have. I plan on using them to replace the after market skirts on my 38 coupe.

Thanks!

Can you post a picture of the skirts? That would make them easier to identify.

Try them against your 38 coupe rear fenders.
if they are '37 they will be about an inch or so wider each side at the bottom.
38-39 will fit straight into your fender.
This applies to original skirts only.
You can get the rubber seals from Dennis Carpenter.

Out of curiosity, does anyone have these measurements for 37 skirts?

I am now a bit confused. Yesterday I finally got to see my skirts. I held them up to my 38 coupe and they looked like they fit the fender opening. I held them up to my 37 sedan and they looked smaller than the fender opening. I happily concluded I had 38-39 skirts. I then measured them just like fordlovr measured his. My measurements are 31 inches from pointy bit to pointy bit and 18 inches top to bottom.

Do I actually have 37 skirts? How do these fit into the fender opening? Will these fit my 38 coupe, or did I get a set of skirts for my dad's 37 tudor flatback? I didn't install mine since the skirts need work, the latch part is missing, and have no gasket to protect the fender paint.

Any wisdom and clarification is appreciated!

The gasket is actually a rubber seal.
Dennis Carpenter sells them.
$30/pair.

Update: The fender skirts that I have are 37 skirts. The flange on the back of the skirts is larger in diameter than the wheel opening on 38-39 (and 40) rear fenders. The flange is the same size as the wheel opening on 37 rear fenders.

So, for correct Ford fender skirts:
31 inches "pointy bit to pointy bit" by 18 inches tall = 37 fender skirts
29 1/2 inches "pointy bit to pointy bit" by 17 inches tall = 38-39 fender skirts.

To confuse the issue a bit I recently purchased what I was told are very early after-market fender skirts. From the outside they sure look like Ford skirts. The back looks a bit different. The really interesting thing is they are the same size as 37 skirts, but the back is smaller, so the skirts fit 38-39 fenders. Here is a comparison of the skirts:

One of the after-market skirts in front of a 37 skirt. They are the same size:

The flange on the back of the 37 skirt is right out at the edge of the skirt. This matches the configuration of the 38-39 skirt that fordlovr posted the picture of:

The back of the after-market skirt looks very different. The flange area is a series of straight sections, and they are nowhere near the edge of the skirt:

The after-market skirts look good though, so I will eventually run them on my 38 coupe.

I have a set of similar looking skirts (aka spats, or wheel covers ) that were on a '35 coupe. Are these possibly '37-'39 as well? These have a hex shaped attaching device at top and key operated locks on both sides at bottom. I need to carefully look these over for some type of manufacturers identification.

The wheels and hubcaps are one of the most beautiful aspects of these early V8's. So why cover half of them up?

Your skirts look like after market skirts in the shape of 37-39 skirts. Use the measurements in my earlier post to determine which year it fits. It appears the bolt was added for looks and doesn't operate any fasteners on the skirts. I think the key locks may have been added after purchase as well.

Yes. My coupe wouldn't look as good without skirts either.

These skirts are available to anyone interested. They came with my '37 years ago. I believe they are NORS - they fit over the fender as opposed to inside of it. They will require a rubber seal so as to not scratch the fender. I've never used them. I don't think they've ever been installed on a car. Shipping will be from CA.
