flywheel resurfacing?
A local shop just re-surfaced my flywheel. They claim its engine-side also had to be re-surfaced for best clutch operation --- an extra charge of course. Does this engine-side shave make any sense?
Thanks Jack E/NJ |

Re: flywheel resurfacing?
I guess they were flipping the flywheel around and having the old surface face in? The only reason I can think of resurfacing both sides is that the surface now facing the engine was so worn that it needed to be resurfaced so the flywheel would bolt down flush? I'm just guessing here -- other folks will chime in I'm sure.

Re: flywheel resurfacing?
Although somebody else suggested that for some reason it might've been the mating surface to the crank that needed attention. I didn't think of that. I'll have to ask the shop.

When you mount it up, if you have a dial indercator check it for squarness. See if ring gear square. |

Re: flywheel resurfacing?
You could be right, George. Hope not. If they did make a mistake, I would think that the best way to remedy would be re-do the clutch-side face, not the engine-side? Don't you think?

Re: flywheel resurfacing?
If the mounting surface needed facing, it should have been done first.
You will probably never know on that. If the mounting surface needed facing, the bolt holes might be elongated also. |

Re: flywheel resurfacing?
Haven't talked to the shop yet but I woke up this morning thinking that the flywheel might've been slightly warped. I think this could affect balance and maybe explain why the engine-side had to be re-surfaced. Does this possibility make any sense?
Thanks for all the replies Jack E/NJ |
