Default rear brake drum ????

a few days ago i went to an old guys house who is headed to an assisted living
facility and is clearing out his collection of a parts etc. while looking around i spotted a pair of new cast brake drums. each had a different pull ring, but that wouldn't matter, and the price too good to pass up. i had them turned true, painted them and started to install them on my truck. well the seal just fell in the bearing bore. my old steel drums measure 3.185 +-, the new drums are 3.250. so what is going on with the odd size? did i just purchase door stops or is there some way to use these drums? maybe they are seconds. but still a strange coincidence.

Drums and hubs are two different parts. Drum is attached to hub using the swedged studs.
Is the bore in the hub that size top to bottom? While .065 may be too lose; https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/P...s/model-a/hubs
Depending on how much they were cleaned up, the drums might be still usable installed on different hubs.

I think this is what he's calling the pull ring.

Thanks Bob C, didn't even think about that reading the post. I revised my post.

it is the bore where the bearing and seal goes that is oversized. the drums are definitely new, but maybe the hubs are old and were put on new drums. the oversized bearing kit maybe the answer. those kits are around $80.00 each
(pricey!) but i only paid $20.00 each for the drums/hub assembly and the lug bolts look new. what bore does the kit take? i hope i didn't pay $40 for a pair of door stops.

Have your machinist fabricate and install hardened sleeves.

The bearing sleeve presses into the stock hub and uses the smaller OD 1936
and up wheel bearing. As far as having a sleeve made it would probably cost
more than buying a new hub.

Does the bearing sleeves sold by Snyder's extend to the area where the seal is installed? It seems strange that wear from the bearing would cause the seal to be so loose. Maybe somebody machined the bore out thinking they would make their own hardened sleeves and then use original style bearings. Just a thought.

Do the sleeves sold by Snyders require a press? in reading the directions I got the feeling they were a slip fit into the hub and were held in place with the glue provided.

From the instructions:

"Now, apply a liberal amount of Quick Metal to the outside diameter of the bearing race. Install bearing race into hub by turning either clock wise or counter-clockwise while pushing the race in. If you don’t twist the race while pushing it into the hub, the Quick Metal will wipe off and prove to be useless."

Brattons is a little different. " The new race can be pressed in with little force."

the seal and bearing area is 3.250 all the way and looks to be machined that way. may be an oversized sleeve was the intentioned reason. those "repair kits" look as though the sleeve is only the width of the bearing, in which case the seal still would not fit fit. the brake drums were definitely new but the hubs were painted black which now makes me think old hubs were put in new drums and bored out to 3.250. the snap ring groove even looks good. i went back to the guys house i bought them from and asked him about them, he had no idea. nice guy, but seems to be getting a bit senile and dose not remember. i'm a half way back yard machinist and wonder what you would use as material for the sleeves. another thought is taking the hubs out of some old worn drums and putting them in these drums.
