Part number 91A9600-A2 is stamped on the bottom and is correct for the 1939 model year....

It seems that the Air Cleaners fitted on Australian 1939 and 1940 Fords differ from those in the USA?
The top photo is 1939 while the lower one is 1940.

The first picture illustrates the 'dry' air cleaner, whereas mercman's pictures show the oil bath version[s] also fitted from factory. Every 39 Ford I've seen in NZ has the oil bath variety.... maybe a Canadian export standard feature?
I'm sure 'swoop, our local 39 expert will correct this if it is erroneous.

I remember back in the 60's most late 30's Ford V8's ( mainly 37's and 38's ) seemed to have the dry type air cleaner.
The oil bath type was available also I believe.

I had a 39 standard in 1965 but can't remember what it had.
The 39 deluxe glove box reference book shows the dry type on pages 13 and 29.
It does say however on page 14 of the manual that with excessively dusty operations an oil bath type air cleaner should be used.
The 39 Mercury owner's manual says much the same thing.

Here's photos of both the regular service oil bath type as well as the two dry type - all four available in 1939.

My 39 Deluxe has the oil bath type like the one in Mercman Oz's photo. I'd assume it is the Canadian edition. I've never heard of a flathead with anything other than the oil bath type air cleaner here.
