Snap-on 140a mig welder
Someone has one posted on craigslist for $350. It's 15 years old but looks to be in great shape. Ive been wanting to buy my first welder and just want to get some opinions.
Would I be better off just buying a NEW Hobart for a little more or is this welder a lot better quality? Its old but looks barely used. I'm looking for something to improve my amateur skill and eventually do some patch panels. Thanks for any suggestions! |

Re: Snap-on 140a mig welder
Two or three things to ponder. Who actually made it (--I'm sure Snap-On didn't!!), ...who sells the consumables, ...and who will service it being that it is 15 years old??

I was pondering those same things. I'm thinking of going with a new Hobart.

Re: Snap-on 140a mig welder
I think some of you guys aren't aware this is a $2295xx welder....plus taxes! Click on the link below & read the specs. Made in USA...welds 1/4" in a single pass.
I have a few snap/on tools and they're all good. I've ordered replacement parts and they always arrived OK. If one can be certain that this unit works OK, I would snap it up because it'll be a real workhorse beside any of the little $400 - $700 units that most beginners buy. I especially like the fact you can add on a TIG attachment at a later date which can be real sweet for extra fine work. The floor level and wheels feature I like better too as the gas bottle straps on the back and you don't have to build a cart. In fact even if it doesn't work I'd still make an offer and buy it. I've bought 2 busted welders and they were easy as pie to fix. Putting all that aside, you'll never get stuck with it as compressors and welders are easy to sell. http://buy.snapon.com/catalog/item.a...store&tool=all Last edited by Craig Lewis; 11-16-2012 at 01:28 AM. |

Re: Snap-on 140a mig welder
Nothing wrong with used provided it's a good machine. I bought a GM MIG (Marquette with stitch, burn and gas control) from HTP. It's a beast, I can blow through 1/4 plate or tack foil with the infinite power and speed controls. I got the machine, a bottle of gas (about 30in tall), extra tweco, 20 lbs wire, auto-dark helmet and gloves for 350 dollars. Granted this was 20 years ago but 350 didn't even get a 110v wire feed and the cheap imports weren't on the scene.
One thing to look for is the quality of the wire drives, good doesn't have plastics. Duty cycle is another thing to consider, the cheaper is usually lower number. Mine is a 100% which means I can weld non-stop without over heating the machine. |
