dead man perches
does any body still use them ? I know the old jallopy & drag racers used them as a sort of panhard bar on traditional left hand steering setups, but would there be any advantage on a street machine.do you use one or both sides!!! thanks! "bear" |

Re: dead man perches
They were simply "dead perches"-meaning they had no action like the shackled perch at the opposite end. On race cars they were on the left hand side. |

Re: dead man perches
the spring eye bolts directly to the perch, eliminating the spring shackle, preventing side to side movement of the frame,qs a panhard bar does! I assume!!! bob da-bear |

Now I understand what the term indicates, big price for that piece though. I wonder how the later perches would work that had the built in sway bar mount? They look like an A width spring would fit in there. |

Re: dead man perches
As a leaf spring compresses it gets longer. If you ran dead perches on both sides you would have no spring movement,[at least until something important broke] and so, no suspenion. Notice on newer cars one end of the spring mounts solidly to the frame and the other end mounts to a shackel. |

Re: dead man perches "one side only"
Beleive right shackle was locked or bracketed solid to axel to eliminate shackle freedom on right side ;this method was to help keep frame from shifting (to right )on hard left turns . Only One shackle was free to operate .Some used a sloted mounting on other side in place of shackles .Mostly seen on MIDGET RACE cars . |
