Default re check alt for out put




if you have no mrters etc! what is best way to check alt to see if it is putting out?thanks in advance. bills1935.

Assuming you have 12 volts, get an aftermarket voltmeter and hook it up.

You can pick up an inexpesive analog or digital multimeter at most auto part stores or Sears. I bought my small digital multimeter for under $10.00

It measures ac and dc voltage also resistance

and continuity.

im going to get yelled at for telling you this, but take pos battery cable off battery while engine is running if it dies alt is not working if it keeps running its charging

That is the most effecient way I know of to destroy an alternator. It has to have voltage to regulate it. No voltage it can run wild.
