I cut a paper gasket to fit the vertical surface on the front of the shifter tower
and put it together. So far so good, however I can't help wondering how a gasket can work without bolts providing pressure to squeeze the surface.
Any thoughts?

If your gasket is thick enough and stuck on with sealer, the top with forward applied pressure, then tighten down the bolts should work.

You are only sealing the top where the shifter tower meets the bell housing. It is there so any 600W that works its way along the shift rail travels into the bell housing instead of down the sides of the transmission case. The holes the shift rails move in and out in the bell housing are open on the inside.

Before tightening the top screws, pry the top casting forward from behind,then finish tightening.

When I install a transmission tower I use a sealer to attach the gasket to the tower, but none to attach the tower to the transmission. I coat that surface and the one against the bell housing with grease. The reason, if ever I need to remove the tower, I won't tear the gasket up, and if I want to replace it I can easily scrape it off or wire wheel the tower. If it is also glued to the transmission housing you will tear it up upon removal and you will have to scrape it off and chance getting bits of gasket down into the transmission.

I follow this same practice when installing the valve cover side plate.
