1940 Ford Pickup Cowl Vent Mechanism
Digging through my stuff for my wife’s 40 Ford Pickup and I am now stuck on the cowl vent mechanism. When I bought the cab nothing was installed but I did get a box of parts. I have the cowl vent, the “U” shaped bar that bolts to it and what appears to be the vent mechanism minus a few parts. I do not have a handle nor the piece that connects the vent to the unit that rotates the cowl vent open and closed, nor do I have a spring.
The pic is taken through the glove box opening ..... First question - what parts am I missing? Second - are these parts available repop Third - if not repop, anyone have the parts used that they are willing to sell? Fourth - any pics/dimensions of the needed parts that I can can scrounge for or make up? Thanks for any help you can give ..... |

You have the handle*. You are only missing the link. It would not be too difficult to make one if you can't locate one.
*Well, you have the handle but the knob is missing. Mart. |

Mart - this is great! Thanks! So I need to find out if Drake or Nacewicz (spelling?) have the right bolts but I need the “T” piece from the handle to the cowl vent. Anyone have one or even a whole unit for sale?

If I can’t find one I have some spare parts I can make it from. I just need dimensions and the approx angle of the portion that bolts to the vent ...., |

Re: 1940 Ford Pickup Cowl Vent Mechanism
I think I have a complete unit(not the vent) that I would be willing to sell. If interested send me an e-mail or PM. and I'll look through my parts. To my knowledge no one repos any of the parts for the mechanism.

Same as car? Saved this a while back; but never put the vent together to know if it is an accurate guide.

Re: 1940 Ford Pickup Cowl Vent Mechanism - Update
The passenger diagram gave me the pattern for when and where the wavy washers are placed, the cerated washers that I knew about from the video from Mart but not exactly where they went - it put things together for me in their proper sequence.
Update ...... TJ has found a complete unit for me and it will be in the mail tomorrow - thanks Tom for going the extra mile for me. I appreciate it very much ......z |

Re: 1940 Ford Pickup Cowl Vent Mechanism
Are the cowl vents and hardware the same 40 through 47 trucks?
And are the 40. 41 trucks cowl vents the same as a 39 40 ford car? Thanks

Re: 1940 Ford Pickup Cowl Vent Mechanism
Question 1. I think the truck ones are the same.
Question 2. I believe the car mechanisms are different. |

Re: 1940 Ford Pickup Cowl Vent Mechanism
The cowl vents and hardware are the same from '40-47. The mechanism is pickup only. I've never compared the actual vent lid to a pickup vs passenger car. The cowl vent gasket is the same for 39-42 cars and pickups and the gasket for the 46-47 pickups is the same as the '46-'48 cars. This info is from Drakes catalog.

Re: 1940 Ford Pickup Cowl Vent Mechanism
Thanks guys. Appreciate your responces .
I compared the lid from the 40 pickup to a 40 merc sedan and the mercury lid is flat and the truck has a ridge in the middle. I wasnt sure if the merc had been modified though. Sent from my LG-H872 using Tapatalk
