I would install a modern starter drive if you don't have one.

When I was running my 6v starter on 12v it seemed, to me, that it really slammed the starter drive home. Not necessary but consider installing 12v starter field coils.

Change light globes, flasher can and if you have electric wipers, that too. I highly recommend you convert the starter to 12v. No matter what the drive, it won't last long. I've seen 6v starters that were supposedly running just fine on 12v but when I took them apart, the truth was revealed. Destroyed drives, flogged out keyways, bent shafts (even the larger 5/8" shaft), you name it.

Quick and easy to use a resistor on the 6V horn. A resistor could be used on a wiper motor, but it would get warm with continuous operation.

about the starter, everywhere I look they want a exchange rebuildable core. I also see that they make a mini starter & I can keep my old starter. I like the mini starter idea. I know there are a few modifications Starter button & solenoid & wiring. which one pros & cons ???

I installed 12v field coils in my starter. You will need a 300w+ soldering iron tho. Maybe a local generator/starter shop could install for you?

You seldom hear about 6v starters running on 12volts pushing the starter ring off the flywheel but it happens. I have seen 3 of them. One of them was mine.
I changed the field coils and converted it to 12 volts. Not difficult but you need a very heavy duty soldering iron.
And as mentioned, use the modern style Bendix drive.

You really should convert the starter to 12Volts or buy the gear reduction starter (mini starter). Before I converted mine to 12Volts, the 6Volt starter broke a barrel drive.

The easiest route is to just convert to 6V neg grnd, then use a 6 to 12 volt converter to give you power for 12v accessories. Simple and cheap.

Don't forget to change dash light bulb. All bulbs must be 12 volts.

Other thoughts about 12V.

I converted to 12v but initially didn’t convert the starter motor. Many contributors to this forum say it’s not necessary so I retained the 6v. The impact on engagement was so severe it frightened me so I made the change. I still consider it severe so will now install a longer lead to the starter to reduce it a little more.

The new 12v starter is far superior and I’d recommend you go that way. It engages the drive before rotating. So why didn’t I go that way. Simple. I am a retiree and am paid a whopping half of one percent interest on my savings and don’t have the money, but I see they have become cheaper now.

Another consideration.
I am about to install a key start. Why? Because why I push the starter lever my foot continually becomes caught between the hand break and the clutch pedal. (we are right hand drive). I am not pedantic about keeping it original but don’t wander too far it.

My advice would be to rewire the field windings in the ahooguh horn. It is not difficult and the attached article will explain how to do it. The dropping resistors on the market cannot handle the power requirement and if you ahooguh the horn too much they will burn out.

A rebuildable core should be easy to find. Try a wanted ad. Start looking first in your local clubs to save shipping. My preference is to leave everything original, the mini starter "just doesn't look right".

Now that he mounted his battery on the firewall I don't think he is too worried about that.

I have the 12-volt Mini starter with a key start. Works great. I also have the 12-volt horn made by A&L.

It's a slippery slope, that whole modifying thing..soon you'll find yourself hopping up the engine and tearing the fenders off it..
