Default Glass dealer in the NJ/PA/Downstate NY Area

Hi all,

The restoration of my Business Coupe continues and it's time for glass. After reaching out to Bratton's today, I learned that most (all?) of the parts dealers don't carry glass any longer. I'm suddenly on the hunt for a glass dealer in the NYC tri-state area. Does anyone have any suggestions for a local shop, or is there a parts place out there that still carries glass?

Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Regards,
Pat

Forget local and go to Sanders Repro Glass in Vancouver, WA.

All the Model A glass is flat. Your local glass shop can order safety glass and cut it to spec. Find the old guy in your area. He still remembers the tricks to easily cut and sand the edges.

Forget what I wrote. I doubt a local guy would do the job for the $508 Sanders lists. That also includes a DOT mark on the windshield. https://www.sandersreproglass.com/orderonline/

if you go on ebay- there were 2 dealers that will ship you your glass for the same cost as
having made in a shop. they also already have the patterns

I use Creekside in Pemberton NJ, because they are close and I only buy 1 or 2 panes at a time. You will need to give them a pattern though.

I can't believe that there isn't a glass shop within driving distance. Maybe post on the Early V8 board as well. But if you want to have the glass cut and shipped this is another option: https://streetrodglass.com/
They did the windshield and door glass for my '39 p/u. Excellent work, fair price, and they ship all over. They have patterns for all the old stuff. If you can't find a local shop its worth a call to these guys. IMO

I checked with local independent glass shops. One had a guy with antique car experience, but they were so busy they sat on it for over a month. I retrieved the new frame and brought it to another local shop where the senior tech knew the difference between original type fiber bedding and rubber bedding. Two weeks and $225.00 later I had my new windshield--nice quality work

My local guy, Hance's Radiator shop, Doylestown , Pa, used to do it. However. His supplier told him he was not doing enough so they weren't going to ship him anymore. My other guy, Aldefers, wants $200 for a door window ! ( lessee, 4 doors X $200 = Yeeeooowww $800.) The first guy Hance, charged me $150 for a windshield all mounted, rubber and everything. and $45 ea. for the quarter windows for my Town Sedan. This was about four years ago. Things are getting bad out there!

I usually use a local guy that I've known for years. He made glass for my Tudor about 4 years ago,and set the windshield glass in the frame. Was $300.then for all 4 side glasses, windshield, but didn't do the back glass. He was doing A windshields for $135-$150 installed in the frame using his bedding material. He will use your original type bedding material that you bring, but it is cost of the glass plus $85.per hour.

Bert's used to carry tempered side glass. I have not checked lately tho. Something a local guy may not be able to provide.

The "local guy" in post #6 supplied tempered glass for the side windows in my p/u.

My side glass was tempered too.I was just going to use safety glass all around,as I usually do,but my friend told me he had hooked up with a new tempering outfit that was much better priced.I said sure,go for it.When he got the glass back not only were they not cheaper, they cost more than his previous tempering service. He said he would cut me some laminated, and sell the tempered to somebody else, but I told him I would take them.At the time he was selling me laminated for $10.49 per square foot.

LOL, over a dozen responses on how everyone did things. Gary in post 2 pretty much answered the question, but the OP hasn’t posted since, so we don’t really know.

Time is money, you can drive from place to place, or make a dozen calls. If you followed Gary’s advice, the glass would be on its way by know, and you’d know the price as it’s listed on their site.

Or chase the comments, “Bob’s glass hop cut me glass in Nebraska, and only charged me $50 when I had it done in 1960, they did great work”.

Yes, I should have worded that differently.

What I meant was the "local guy" usually wouldn't be able to cut the tempered glass in his shop, he would have to order it to size. Maybe your guy can temper glass, I don't know (or care). My point is MOST glass shops can't deal with tempered glass, they have to order it to size.

All the glass places around here need to have access to tempering. They cut it,and they either take it to the tempering outfit or it gets picked up by them. They would have almost no work if they couldn't get tempering done. They couldn't service schools, municipalities, stores, gas stations, etc.Almost anything dealing with the public requires tempered glass. The guy I deal with has pickups/deliveries from the tempering company at least twice a week.I was told a long time ago if I gave a pattern,or measurements,to double ant triple check.Once he cut the glass he could make some size changes,or changes to the radius on the corners, but once it left for tempering that was it.Engraved in stone,no changes.

Thanks for all of the responses! I've reached out to a few of the suppliers mentioned above and I'm waiting to hear back from any of them. Fingers crossed! Thanks again.
