Default 59 AB crankshaft timing gear replacement, Help

I was changing a 21 stud camshaft out for the correct 59 AB cam so I can get rid of the adapter. Started to replace the cam and found a chipped tooth on the timing gear on the crank. Looks like the machine shop chipped it while rebuilding the engine, then decided to install it anyway. The engine has a couple hours of run time on it. No hope getting help from them as it was done over 2 years ago. It had a new fiber gear, you can see where it was starting to wear a little. The chip is on the front of the tooth, and I'm sure it has to be replaced. What does it take to replace the gear. It looks like the crank will have to come back out. this has been a nightmare to say the least, and not the first problem. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Ron

Post some pictures as to the issue that you have (the chipped gear). Unless it has a really bad chip in it, I would think it would not be an issue - especially if running an aluminum timing gear. You really should NOT try to use a 2-jaw puller on the crank gear . . . can easily just chip teeth and still not get it off.

You should really use a puller that is designed to pull crank gears - they support the whole underside of the gear. What I can't tell you is IF they can be used with the crank in the engine (pan off). My guess is that there is probably a special one made for a Flathead (to work while the crank is in the block), but I've never used on. Anybody know of one to use on an assembled engine???

I would defiantly go with an alum timing gear with the current crank gear or a new gear.

Thanks for the replies. It is a very little chip, on the front top of the gear. I will clean it up a little with a dremel, and replace the new fiber gear with a aluminum gear. I do appreciate your help. Ron
