Changing engine oil...
How many miles do you drive your Model A before you change your engine oil?
Thanks. Pluck |

Re: Changing engine oil...
I have been changing oil every 500 miles, I don't have a oil filter.

Re: Changing engine oil...
I also change my oil every 500 miles. Oil is cheap, engine work is expensive!

Re: Changing engine oil...
I change the oil once a year regardless of the mileage accumulated. Both of my Model A's do not have oil filters, and no oil additives are used. Either a full synthetic oil or a synthetic blend oil are used.

Re: Changing engine oil...
1500-2000 with full flow filter. Could probably go longer as it is still looks new at 2000 miles. I use Lucas classic Car Motor oil.

Re: Changing engine oil...
I change oil between 700 - 1000 as time permits. No filter, I average approximately 1000 miles a month. I average 250 per week, I am retired find it hard to find time to change oil every second week.

Re: Changing engine oil...
Once a year. Car only driven 100 to 200 miles per year.
Engine rebuilt in the 70’s. No filter. 20w-50 HD oil. Uses no oil between changes. Engine has about 7,500 miles on rebuild. Enjoy. |

Re: Changing engine oil...
About every 500 miles, no filter. Just rebuilt the engine 700 miles ago, so I’ll be good about oil changes for a while.

Re: Changing engine oil...
On a newly built engine, I change at no more than 100 miles, next change at 500, then about 1,000 miles. I use a filter.
There is one exception to this and that is when I am on a long trip. In the engine I use for towing (7 - 10 thousand miles at a time), I have pressure fed the middle main bearing and I have a pressure gauge on it. I find that with new oil, the car runs 50mph, 170 F and 27 psi. As the miles accumulate, the pressure begins to drop at the same speed and temperature. When it gets to a randomly selected threshold of 23 psi, I change it. With the cheapest oil available, that happens reliably at about 3,500 - 3,800 miles. Filter is changed every second oil change. I have done 35,000 miles on that engine so far so clearly I am not pushing things too far.

Re: Changing engine oil...
I have been using Lucas HotRod oil too. Was using Rotella-T until they changed the chemistry.
I change every year, or 500 miles whichever comes first. The above poster said oil is cheap but engine work is not. He sure is right! |

Re: Changing engine oil...
The previous owner of my car told me that he had the engine rebuilt at Schwalm’s, and he told me to change the oil every 1000 miles. He was using 10W30 oil.

Re: Changing engine oil...
I want to have my oil analyzed next oil change to see how that comes out. I use Blackstone Labs and have done it for my modern cars. I am really interested to see how my Model A oil checks out. https://www.blackstone-labs.com/?ses...tghi3%29%29%2F
