Default Hello from the noob

Figured I'd take a minute to introduce myself, seems customary to do so in forums however I did not see a place to do so here. I'm a bodyman by trade for the last 30 years and finally decided I needed to build something that I've always wanted. My current project (still in the acquiring parts phase) is a 30-31 model a truck, to far I've got a 4" drop and drilled front axle which I plan on running suicide. 37-48 spindles, disk brake rotors and caliper brackets (has to be able to stop to be safe) spring behind front radius hairpin rods with ford tie rod ends. A 52 ford flathead v8 motor and trans from a f4 and the majority of a 30-31 cab...my plan is to build a period correct traditional with the exception of the front disks which I'll probably hide inside of a set of drums. This is my first dealings with a model a so I'm sure I'll become a nuisance asking questions (mainly how the body's was constructed) but I hope I won't be a bother with it. I look forward to scouring the for sale section for the bits and pieces I still need as well as searching for what others have done with their builds

Welcome to the club. Might I suggest that you try the HAMB as they are more for the rod than we are. We are more of a stock crowd.

I am a member of the hamb, this group was suggested to me by flop cause I'm having a hard time finding a truck back panel. Also I have a pile of parts you guys would want for restoring whereas I won't use them, all in all not a bad deal for both of us I don't figure...I just like to be honest and up front with everybody...how does one post pictures here? Photobucket?

Welcome, you may want to rethink that F4 trans if it is a 4 speed. If you have
a boat they make a good anchor.

Welcome. Please edit you account to include your city/state so we may know where the take-off parts may become available.

Thanks... and again, welcome to the Ford Barn.

I was thinking I would need a car transmission but this one was included for the price of the flathead so why not take it right? I'm still learning as to what I'll need to make everything work, which is why I'm here I guess

Still trying to figure out the site, not so much take off parts as it is I buy lots to get 1 or 2 pieces cause most often guys don't want to sell me the pieces I want...Which I find odd but if nothing else I've got trading material I guess...

The 4-speed is a boat anchor but you can use the hogs head off of it to mount
a S10 5-speed or the mid to late 80's Ford pickup 4-speed overdrive trans.

Sorry I was not trying to be off putting. I just wanted you to know we are more of a stock forum than a hot rod forum. That is all. Welcome and it sounds like you have the pieces for a really great truck. Please post pics when you get a chance.

Bob thank you for a very helpful piece of information!!! Any particular year s-10 t5?

Edit: I was going to use the tranny from the f4 just cause of the hand brake that's still attached to the back end of it...wonder if I can put that on the tail of a t5?!?!

Your image is probably too big. Reduce the size and try again.

No worries Mike, I figure I have a lot of pieces somebody else could use. Considering their 90 years old I can't bring myself to scrap them...far too much American heritage has been scrapped and came back as Hondas and toyotas as it is now...I just like the rods of the 40's and 50's better than I do cars and trucks in stock form...they have a soul we just have to let them show it to the world

S10's used the T5 up until 1995. Pretty die hard trans. 1996 they went to the NV1500 or NV3500

As Bob said, That 4 speed is to big, to heavy and just not good for what you are building. A 3 speed from a 50-52 pickup would be better for a bolt on. And a 5 speed would be even better, but just not traditional and more costly to adapt. I run a 39 trans in my flathead. Just my 2 1/2 cents. How is flop and where has he been.? Excellent body man.

I found flop while doing research on my model a cab...run across a thread he did on one on diy auto then followed the rabbit hole to him...I spoke to him last week trying to find a rear cab panel for my truck...he told me I should of went to Hershey cause they was all over the place (just my luck!) then he suggested I come here and look...outside of that I don't know him...seemed like a great guy in the 30-45 minute conversation I had with him...certainly knows his way around these old cars and trucks for sure...he gave me some very helpful information
