Default Fenton iron headers-clutch pedal clearance prob

Hi; we just diagnosed a clutch problem in a '40 with fenton iron headers. The in frame exhaust pipe from the header runs under the clutch pedal and limited its travel. The clutch pedal arm hit the exhaust pipe before necessary full travel. Clearance is being corrected now. Very tight in there with 'in frame' routing of the exhaust. Newc

True on my '41 as well. I had an old school muffler shop hook up my Reds Headers. They had to mash the pipe a little to get full clutch pedal travel.

You have trouble too when running dual exhaust through the frame on the left side near the clutch with a stock system.

Flatting an exhaust pipe over a short distance does little to nothing to the exhaust flow. More than likely you are using a larger diameter exhaust than needed to begin with!

Mr. Seery has the solution that I also used on my 40 with FENTON headers.

Look carefully at this photo and you can seen where I used a ball pein hammer to flatten the top of the exhaust pipe to clear the clutch pedal. You can also use a piece of steel rod for better control instead of hitting the pipe directly. Been like that for 20 years. I think it increased my ET by .006 seconds !

Taken a hammer to a number of headers to get clearance. Long 4-tubes can be a real challenge on some vehicles!
