Default 41 mercury engine question

I have looked at Van Pelt's web site and any other sites that related to this subject. 1941 Mercury engines should have 19A on the heads, was there any chance that the 19 could be left off and just an A shows? Or does the A say what year or make the engine is, engine appears blue?

You'll have to remove a head and measure the bore. Heads are easily changed.

There are heads that just have an A on them. They are compatible with the earlier motors with the valves closer to the cylinders. If I remember correctly they have a relatively small combustion chamber and can offer an increase in compression ratio. They might give valve clearance problems if used on a 59 type motor unless the valve picket area is relieved.
Try looking along the top edge just above the deck face. Sometimes there is a part number cast in along there.
Mart.

Yes, a very good chance the heads just have a Large "A" cast in the centers. The original engine would be blue. There may be a small "99" stamped in the right front top of the block between the intake manifold and the cylinder head.

The large "A" heads were 81A heads and they were used on the early Mercury 99A engines till Ford made purpose build heads for them. The 81A heads have a higher compression ratio than Mercury specific heads do. There is a cylinder head chart in the Green Bible chassis parts catalog that gives a pretty good run down of the heads for early V8s. The 1940 and 41 Mercury would have had the 99T prefix heads that all the 95 HP engines had. The 29A heads came out in 42 but they were short lived due to the war. My 1938 through 41 chassis parts catalog lists what fit what in those years. They never made a 19A prefix head that I'm aware of.

Correct. T heads had a slightly lower compression ratio that the A heads.
At least 39 - 41 Mercs used the T heads.

recently bought a 40 Mercury Coupe from a friend and fellow Fordbarner. Heads are 81T and 99 is stamped on the front rail between the intake and head on the passenger side front of motor.
