Horn isnt working.
When i had my model a out last time, i used the horn as i was leaving from church, all at once it quit working as i still had my finger on the button. I think it might be something in the button, but im not sure. The horn was cleaned back in the summertime and was working great. I was just wondering if anyone else has had something like this happen or if anyone has any info they could give me that would be great. I havent looked at it yet and since im new to model a's i thought it would be a good idea to ask some people with some more experience around these awesome vehicles.

Re: Horn isnt working.
Does the horn motor still turn when you push the button? Is there a noticeable discharge when the button is pushed and no sound comes out?

Re: Horn isnt working.
Its best to go to the end of the juice to see what is going on at the horn. Take a testlight and ck for power at the horn. when you depress the horn button it grounds the blue / yellow wire to operate the horn.

Re: Horn isnt working.
i had that problem 55 years ago and it was the screw on the back of the horn would vibrate loose and not blow. i was driving home one day and the horn was working so i just held it on, i liked the sound, but one of the local cop's didn't feal the same, he gave me a ticket for going so fast that i had to lay on the horn for people to get out of the way, it cost me my liscence for 30 days.

Quote:
The horn should have 6 volts at all times, and the wire leading to the horn button should also show 6 volts, until the horn button is pushed, which then grounds the horn. |

Re: Horn isnt working.
I'm new to A's too but my horn did this to me last weekend. It turned out to be the button. The internals of the button were all rusty and not making a good ground when the button was depressed. To properly fix this you must remove the light switch at the end of the steering column, 2 bolts, a retaining clip, and then the horn shaft will slide out. I have a truck so I had to dismantle the horn button assembly with the shaft sticking 1/2 way out of the steering wheel. You will be able to remove the unit and put it on a work bench.
The button is held in by 4 tabs. Carefully straighten the 4 tabs and then work the button out of the shaft. If they break, worse case is a new assembly for $39.99. You can probably get away with breaking one or two of the tabs though. The button has a washer, spring, and cap. Put all of these on a wire wheel and clean them well. Also clean the inside of the steering wheel where the horn button washer sits. While it's out, check continuity of the wire in the shaft on both ends. Put everything back together. Toot the horn and smile. Before messing with the button, I would supply your horn with direct power and ground to make sure it works. If it works, then go for the button.

Re: Horn isnt working.
First do a visual. Pull the cover and watch the motor as you push the button. Good chance the connections at the motor are loose. Bob
