uncomfortable seats

I have had my tudor for 40 years and have driven many miles, but as I get older, the ride gets more uncomfortable. We are both sore from the past weekend at the new england meet. I dont want to change the seats, since I like the car to be original, so I guess I should look for a standard 30-31 coupe for long rides. It would need to have a trunk, not a rumble seat. Black would be nice. Maybe a nice color. I'll need to think about that.
I should not have sold that nice 29 coupe I had a few years ago.

New Stipe shocks combined with re-shaping and easing ends of well lubricated spring leaves help soften the ride.

Thanks for the comments, but I dont want a fordor. I fit in the coupe and tudor just fine, and the car rides nice, as it has good springs with covers, stipe shocks, and new tires. It is the seats that are killing us. It's like sitting on a tuffet! I will continue looking for a coupe without a rumble seat.

Where did you see that, Paul? I would guess he would want a hefty price for that, as it is mostly original.

Thanks dave, but the tudor is not for sale. After 40 years, I need to keep it for the kids.

The old Volkswagen bug seats make a nice bolt in fit for the Tudor. Can change them out when you need to. I use a jelfoam pad on mine.

I put a new set of springs in my 29 std coupe. The old ones were sagging and it felt like I was sitting in a hole, which I was. The new springs seems to be better but they also seem to be rather hard. Maybe I need more padding on the seat part.

The new springs are a bit stiffer than original. I have installed a lot of them in customer's cars. I installed new springs in the bottom of the front seats when I re did the interior about 7 years ago. It's just that the tiny tudor seats are not as good as a full width seat like the other cars have.

Snyders makes custom springs. That 's how they got into business.

I would suggest you call Tom Snyder there and discuss your dilemma. I'll bet Tom could design and make some softer springs for you.

They have custom rates in their latest catalog.

Thanks Larry, but the springs are not the problem, it is the small size and the shape of the tudor seats. Unless a person has gone a long distance in a tudor, it may not make sense, but they are not comfortable. Mine have new Snyder springs, and new seat coverings from Lebaron Bonney, so they are as good as they can get. Maybe I need to take more frequent rest stops.

I also see that Snyders will make springs in three different heights.

Funny you should say that. In a recent post I asked about Tudor seat comfort, and many people said they are REALLY comfortable, see:

In the same thread I quoted a non-Model A friend who said:

"Those seats are very uncomfortable and non-supportive. They're like sitting on a knob, rather than being cradled by the seat."

He said knob, you say tuffet...very similar items to sit on!

It's similar to that some people can sleep on any type of bed...very soft or rock hard it doesn't matter to them; while others need it to be "just right".

Also depends how long you're in the car and how your health is.

Speaking from years of experience, a 1930 - '31 Model "A" Coupe has a comfortable seat and a large trunk. A Coupe is one of the easiest Model "A's" to get into and out of.

Some simple things you can do to make a Model "A" ride nicer:
> 16" or 17" or 18" Ford wheels with a shortened Pitman arm;
> 27 to 30 psig tire pressure;
> Spring covers loaded with SAE 140 gear oil or STP;
> Not so simple, but modern telescoping shocks make a difference.

I sat in a Tudor at Hickory Corners on Saturday that had front seats from a '99 Malibu. They were very comfy ... and had lumbar support. The owner installed them for medicinal purposes. He did a very nice job and the passenger seat folded forward for access to the back seat.
I know a Power Tour guy who has a Tudor with seats from a Chrysler minivan. It is a very nice restomod. The seats look like Henry put them in.
If modification makes it possible to drive your Model A awhile longer, have at it.
Also, if you need the phone number of the guy with the Malibu seats, PM me. It is/was for sale at a very reasonable price.

My friend has a '31 Coupe. He just bought a complete new seat from LeBarron Bonney. It is very comfortable.

As for my Pickup, the seats currently in it look beautiful, but are VERY uncomfortable. I think they were built from scratch without not much regard for anything but looks. They sit way too high, and are much like sitting on a buckboard in a wagon.

I intend on replacing them with new seats from LeBarron that have the shorter Snyder springs.
